Granite Colors, Finishes, and Textures

Different types of rocks have been useful in the construction industry, and you will notice their traces everywhere. A type of igneous rock known only on earth, granite forms a major part of the continental crust. It is also a natural source of radiation, which raises some concerns regarding safety. Although granite comes in black and white due to its chemical composition, manufacturers have found a way to achieve neutral colors by combining other types of rock such as feldspar, quartz, and ivory. Other colors of granite include blue or azul produced in Brazil and Spain; green, which is commonly found in Norway; pink from Brazil and China; and gold and copper that are prolific in Brazil and Italy. Black and white granite colors are common choices in modern home decorating because of their utility and elegance. Blue granite makes a good finish in homes, while green makes your house closer to nature. Pink granites may vary from rose to lavender and can be used in bathroom fixtures to emphasize femininity; while gold and copper are commonly used in various home décor. Granite can also be identified based on its different finishes. Granite finishes can be polished, satin, or honed. Polished granite has a glossy finish as most of its pores are sealed shut to repel moisture. Satin granite is a newer type of finish which can be described as something between polished and honed granite. For kitchen countertops, honed granite with matte finish yet susceptible to surface staining is commonly used. Colors and finish when combined create granite textures. Texture of granite is said to be phaneritic which allows the observer to see crystals on it. Granite can be course, medium, and smooth. Granites such as pekalla pink, quimbra, and pedra vella de cangas are coarse. Medium and smooth granites are commonly used for home decoration as well as flooring for hotels and offices
