If you’re like most people, you probably think of many great organizational ideas and plans every single day. Unfortunately, because of busy schedules and other time constraints, most people never take the time to implement these great organizational plans. Of course, you cannot reap the benefits of an organizational plan unless you actually put it into action. Since taking the first step is often the most difficult part of getting organized, here are a few ideas you can use to jump-start your organizational plans.

Create a Realistic Plan

Many organizational plans fail because they are simply too ambitious or unrealistic. If you set undoable goals for yourself, you will simply get discouraged and give up trying. Instead, take the time to write out a plan, being careful to keep everything realistic. Take your schedule, as well as the schedules of your other family members, into consideration when designing your plan. For example, if you know that your child has soccer practice and piano lessons every Saturday afte
oon, scheduling a full day of cleaning on Saturday will simply not work. Breaking work sessions up into smaller chunks can be a great way to effortlessly fit cleaning and organizational tasks into your family’s busy schedule.

Assess Your Needs

Although you might have a vague notion of what you’d like to do in order to get better organized, you should take some time to really assess your home and lifestyle. Look for areas where you could really improve overall efficiency by adding a bit more organization. For example, if you and your family are always scrambling in the morning to find the things you need when leaving the house, creating an individualized storage area close to the door for each family member could solve the problem. Once you have a good idea as to what you need to do, you’ll be better prepared to itemize individual actions and tasks to get the job done.

Divide the Work into Manageable Tasks

If you never seem to have enough time to devote to cleaning and organizing, break the work up into much smaller tasks. To do this, start by writing a specific organizational project onto a piece of paper. Create an outline, itemizing the various steps you would need to take to get the job done. Then, break each step down into small individual tasks, each designed to take less than an hour to complete. Once you’ve broken the job into small chunks of work, you’ll be able to do one or two of them whenever you have a bit of free time.

Celebrate Small Victories

If your home needs a lot of organizational help, it’s easy to get discouraged when you’re not getting the job done as quickly as you’d like. Instead, try celebrating what you have achieved instead of lamenting what still needs to be done. For example, each time you’ve completed all of the small tasks that make up one step on a project, celebrate the victory as a family. Not only will you have a bit of fun, but you’ll be helping to keep everyone motivated and on-task until the entire project is complete.
