There are many opinions about ab workouts -which ones are best, how often to do them, whether it's better to use a machine or old fashioned exercises, etc. No matter which approach you decide to take, you need to make sure your view of fitness is holistic: you need to exercise your entire body. This will actually help your ab region as well because you will be burning calories while you tone your groups of muscles. Here are some of the ab workouts that lots of fitness experts advocate doing.

Some of the very best ab workouts won't even require you to leave your house to get them done. Bike exercise is one of them. Sure, you can get benefits from riding a bicycle or using a stationary bike at the gym, but you can also do a very effective exercise at home that simply copies the motion of pedaling. You just do this by lying down on the floor, preferably upon a clean exercise mat. Bend your knees at a forty five degree angle, put your hands behind your head and start "pedaling" and while you do touch your right knee to your left elbow and then your left knee to your right elbow and then repeat while you pedal. Begin the exercise slowly and then, as you pedal build up speed.

You could also use an ab roller if you'd like an inexpensive tool that will help you work your abs. This tool is small and easy to move around and store in the home. The ab roller looks like little more than a wheel with handles attached to it which is what it really is. Just kneel down, grab the handles and push the wheel away from you and then pull it back. This motion, when done in repetition is great for the abdominal muscle area. Ab rollers are often listed for sale on the net, at sports stores and even in department stores. If you want a simple and inexpensive machine to help you get in shape and work your abs, this is the one for you.

Pilates exercises have proven to be good for your core, including your ab muscles which makes it a good option for ab workouts. Pilates has gained lots of popularity in recent years and it is likely that you'll have lots of classes to choose from. You can also do all of the exercises by yourself at home in front of an instructional video. Even though some Pilates exercises require special machines, most of them don't require any equipment at all. Many of the exercises are similar to yoga, and involve stretching and strengthening the middle part of your body, or core. Lots of people who do Pilates find that, while they get fantastically toned abs from the exercise, it also helps them become more flexible and generally fit.

Ab workouts can take many different forms, though they all work on the same groups of muscles. In addition to exercising your abs you also need to make sure you work the rest of your body with cardio and resistance training. If you are diligent and patient, you can get a great deal of help by using the ab workouts outlined in this article. Try to get the most out of every workout and you'll see the improvements you want to see.
