Buenos Aires is an autonomous city, in the ‘Capital Federal’ – a separate federal district, on the south bank of the Estuary of the River Plate. It is separate, yet part of Gran Buenos Aires, GBA, or Greater Buenos Aires. If you have come to visit Buenos Aires, and found a comfortable apartment to stay for your visit, the next step is to have a look around. You will find many tours of the city and may need several days to absorb the flavor of this vibrant South American city. Soon you will want to venture out into the surrounding cities, the countryside and Argentina as a whole. There is so much to see and experience that you can only hope to touch on a few places. If you would like to see some of the nearby cities, without going too far a field, there are fourteen partidos. These are urbanized municipalities. They are: * San Miguel * Tres de Febrero * Avellaneda * General San MartÃn * Vicente López * Ituzaingó * José C. Paz * Lanús * Lomas de Zamora * Malvinas Argentinas * Morón * Quilmes * San Isidro * Hurlingham There are also ten partly urbanized partidos. They are: * Almirante Brown * Berazategui * Esteban EcheverrÃa * Ezeiza * Florencio Varela * La Matanza * Merlo * Moreno * San Fernando * Tigre Then there are six more partly urbanized partidos that are in the process of being incorporated into the Greater Buenos Aires. They are: * Escobar * General RodrÃguez * Marcos Paz * Pilar * Presidente Perón * San Vicente Although there are 24 municipalities in the unit, they are only loosely connected and not administered as a unit. They are grouped all around Buenos Aires City, except of course to the east where the RÃo de la Plata, or River Plate is. This huge sprawl of urbanization has a combined population of more than twelve and a half million people. According to the 2000 census, Buenos Aires City alone had a population of about two and a half million. There are many ways to get around. Your rental apartment agents may be able to recommend guided coach tours, or you may want to use the popular transport. In Retiro a barrio in the northern part of the Capital Federal is a bus terminus with buses going to all parts of the country. The Argentina train system and metro are mostly limited to the Greater Buenos Aires area, where it is very popular. Taxis are black and yellow and can be hailed anywhere in the streets. Remis are taxis that do not have distinctive looks and have to be ordered or booked by phone. Parking is a serious problem in the city, so many people use motor cycles, although this can be a fairly hazardous way to travel if you are unfamiliar to Buenos Aires. If you are energetic, check out one of the many walking tours. This is the best way to get up close and personal to the city.
