Tomatoes are one of the most favoured fruit for novice gardeners to grow. They are a staple of the majority of people’s diet and for gardeners can provide a great feeling of gratification to see them grow from seed to fruit. There are many varieties of tomato from hybrid to heirloom species; the latter are getting to be more well-known with home gardeners due to their differing tastes and exciting fruit flavour. Tomatoes are a most desired fruit globally with the top five producers being China, USA, India, Turkey and Egypt. Tomatoes are packed with Lycopene which is a good antioxidant and some varieties contain high levels of vitamin C and vitamin A that are each necessary in the human diet. Tomatoes are some of the useful fruits and can be eaten raw or made into sauces such as tomato puree and are often the basis for many a cookery recipe. rnProducing tomatoes hydroponically doesn't impact on the standard, nutritional value or flavour of the fruit, and in lots of cases can enhance the taste as the producers are in control of the amount of nutrients uptaken by the seedlings. It is most effective to initiate your tomato crop from seed because if they are brought in from outside there is more chance that bugs can also be brought in, which may harm the crop in the future. Seeds should be placed in rockwool cubes that have been saturated beforehand with water. These should then be stored and enclosed in a cultivation tray in a warm environment between 20-25°C until the seeds start to grow. Once this happens you can transport them to a light source and remove the lids of the trays. They will require a light source for about 12 hours per day and should then produce tiny leaves generally within a fortnight. Once this occurs the new plants are ready to be transferred to the hydroponic system you have picked. There are different systems that are employed, each having their own pros and cons reliant on the variety of tomato you have chosen to grow. However one of the most important factors of tomato growing is light. When the plants reach complete maturity they'll need around 16 hours of uninterrupted light typically from fluorescent lights. Again there are many different lights on the market at the moment and your local hydroponic supplier will know which ones to suggest to you based upon the system you are using in your hydroponic garden. The level of nutrients, pH and temperature likewise needs to be supervised to ensure that your hydroponic garden generates the best crop possible. Growing fruits and vegetables hydroponically ensures that you can have home grown crops all year long. Hydroponic gardens mean that times of the year do not dictate what you eat, you can have strawberries in the midst of winter, the choices are endless.
