Cosmetic surgery is a big decision for anyone to make, there is a lot that goes into it - deciding if you are ready, doing the research, finding the right surgeon, finding the right technique. With all the advancements in surgery, and most notably cosmetic surgery, the "quick fix" surgeries are not always the best option, nor are the dated surgical techniques that are a thing of the past. Once meeting with the surgeon, the surgeon usually goes over all your wants and needs for the procedure. It's crucial for the patient to have realistic expectations of the surgery and what results they will get from the procedure. Hair transplant results vary but the truth is - we all want a natural hairline. And if you are going to take the leap and get a hair transplant procedure, you want results that will make you proud and overall happy with your appearance. For hair restoration results, it's important to have realistic expectations about when you will actually begin to see hair growth. Once the grafts have scabbed and healed completely, that's when the growth can finally start happening in the transplant area. Whether you got follicular unit extraction or strip harvesting, the growth process after a hair transplant is pretty much the same. It is your own hair so the growth will be exactly the same as the normal growth pattern of your hair. The first two months, there might be some growth and there might not be growth. It all depends on the individual and how their hair grows in. If there is growth within these first two months, it is usually small hairs growing in. Six months is when most patients really start to see their growth from the transplant. One thing we recommend is to continue your hair loss prevention regimen if you were doing it before the transplant. Propecia is one example - if a patient is taking Propecia before the hair transplant, it's important that they continue Propecia even though they are getting the transplant. The full results come about 9 months to a year after the procedure. It's typical that a hair transplant surgeon will want to see you after the first year to see how the hair grew in and if you are happy with the results. Designing a natural, artistic hairline for the patient is the number one goal for a skilled hair transplant surgeon and the results are the most important part of the process. It's critical for the surgeon to provide realistic expectations for the patient to make sure they understand what they should expect from the results and from the procedure. So often, patients have unrealistic expectations of the procedure and the results and do not understand either why their hair is not growing as quickly, or why they are not seeing the results that they wanted from a photo they brought in of themselves when they were much younger with a full head of hair. It's crucial for the surgeon to go over everything with the patient prior, during and after the procedure to avoid any misunderstandings about the hair transplant.
