The one thing you do not want to do is doubt the ability of your business to become successful. When I first entered Business, I didn't know this. I would question my own abilities constantly, and would contemplate quitting almost everyday. All that I got form those less productive activities was constant confusion within myself, and diminished energy to focus on the task at hand, building my business.
The truth is, we all have faith in something; the question is what are you going to have faith in? You could decide to have faith the negatives and believe that the possibility of being a successful business owner is hard to come by, or you could choose to have faith and believe that everything is possible given reasonable time and effort.
I choose to believe that there is a power higher than me; a power that's responsible for something as complex as the life we live. A power that I can count on for wisdom and understanding in dealing with somewhat difficult situations. That power is God through His Son Jesus Christ. Whatever it is you choose to believe in is up to you but just make sure it is a belief that you can do it if you decide to.
"Daddy, what should I be when I grow up"?
That was the question I posed to my father over fifteen years ago; while I did not know it then, the response he was about to give was going to be one of the single most important things I've ever heard in my life. He said: "Jr" as I am called by my family, "you can be whatever you want to be".
I took that statement and ran with it since. From that day, I've always reminded myself that I can be whatever I want to be. In the sames light, you business can be whatever you want it to be. All you need is Faith and dedication.
Employee vs Employer
One of the first mistakes I made was to still think of myself as an employee in my own business. You may be saying about now that you've heard this before. That may be true but what you may not have hear before was how exactly to deal with the shift especially if you still have a job.
At the job you currently have, you knew that after working your first two weeks or so, you were guaranteed to receive a paycheck; but in your business, the is no guarantee that you will make a profit even after 15 weeks.
I went in with the expectation that I was going to be making $3000 a month off the bat and within 8-12 months would be making around $30,000 per month. Very bad. What did that sort of expectation do? It began to shut me down slowly when I realized that I was not going to be making that much in the time allotted.
Here is a key point to consider: No matter what business you're in, there will always be someone who has made more money in a shorter time than you are. Don't ask me why or how; it's just one of the facts of life. All you need to do is evaluate your skills and abilities and set reasonable expectations for yourself. And even if you do not perform to your own expectations, remember that there's always a tomorrow and you can do better.
You see, what was learning, was basically telling me to hate the fact that I had a job; or Just over Broke as it's often referred to as. The sad thing is with such an attitude towards your work, you will always be in a bad mood and not have a clear mind that would give you the ideas you need to make your business successful. Maybe a better way to define and look at a job is as Juicy Opportunities Builder. If you see it as an opportunity builder, you will have a much better attitude towards it and everything else around you.
Let me put it another way. If you are like most people who start businesses (which I hope you are when it comes to this point), you want your business to grow and have employees and expand. Now how would you feel if your employees had a bad attitude towards your business? Exactly! That's what I thought.
Here's the deal, unless you work for Uncle Sam or a Non Profit Organization, Your job depends on your being the best employee you can be for it to succeed and you need a sources of income while the business gets off the ground. Do unto you current employer as you would have your employees to unto you.
Supervisor? You!
Why didn't somebody really make me to understand that I was going to be responsible for my own action (or lack of)? Going back to My Network Marketing story, I felt because my sponsor was also going to make money on my efforts, it was her task to make sure things got done. Well, I was wrong. When I was selling door to door as a contractor, I still somehow subconsciously expected a supervisor to be on me making sure I was doing what I was supposed to be doing.
I don't thing I need to tell you that you are your own boss in your business. You already know that, that is probably why you thought about starting a business in the first place. So how did I get over this hurdle? SELF TALK:
It may sound stupid or overly simple but that is the fact. I really had to make myself realize that my next venture was about me, and whatever the outcome was, I would be responsible for it. No matter how you about this is totally up to; however, I really suggest you try it if you're facing a problem similar to what I faced. Hey, it worked for me.
The Big Picture
Your business is your precious Jewel. No matter what industry you've decided to service and brig value to (assuming those are your priorities; i.e servicing and bringing Value), Chances are the earlier days will undoubtedly be a bit shaky; not just the early days but at different stages of the business as well. The best way I've found to deal with those shaky times is to focus on the big picture. I'm sure you wouldn't have ventured business if you didn't have a dream to make it big. (For those who just got into business only to make a few extra dollars, ignore the preceding sentence). So when the going gets tough and the nay sayers are all over telling you how you can't do it, you can call on that big picture to keep driving you.
Another thing that will most definitely help you is to surround yourself with people that will encourage you and help you become the success you see yourself becoming.
Remember: If you didn't have what it took, you wouldn't have the dream you have. Go get them!
