Of all the concerns about the HCG diet, one of the most frequent is whether women should keep taking HCG drops during their menstrual cycle. HCG drops are becoming more and more widespread, and so this question comes up even more than before. It's definitely something worth covering so there's no more confusion.
Although you may be taking convenient oral HCG drops, the original HCG diet program called for injections. Dr. Simeons, inventor of the diet, stated that during the menstrual cycle injections should not be taken. Simeons treated countless women, and stated that stopping HCG never caused additional hunger until the end of the period, when hunger would come on quickly and forcefully. Taking a new dose of HCG stopped such hunger right away. Simeons did not offer any particular reason for stopping the injections during menstruation, although some people have wrongly stated that he did.
On average, women lose less weight than men on the HCG diet, partly because of the retention of water during their period. It's typical for weight loss to slow down for women during this time. It's completely normal, and once your period is over the weight will rapidly come off again. So don't get frustrated, and don't cheat! That would only make things worse. Just power through it, and you'll soon be losing weight again.
As mentioned above, Dr. Simeons explicitly states that women should not take HCG drops during their cycle. He is our best resource, and we stick to his recommendation. It's the best way to guarantee the best results.
However, there is a difference between HCG drops and the original injections. Because of their different manufacturing process, homeopathic HCG drops have less serious side effects. Some women have tried taking HCG drops during their menstrual cycle and reported good results. A few have reported worse bleeding and cramping. Most said their weight loss did not slow down as much. This seems to be a good sign, but without more evidence we still believe it to be a little risky. It's always best to follow the original protocol. Stopping HCG drops during the menstrual cycle still has a strong history of amazing results.
