The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have stated, that more than a third of American adults, are not getting enough sleep, on a daily basis. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and the Sleep Research Society, recommend that adults aged 18–60 years sleep at least 7 hours each night to promote optimal health and well-being. They state that, sleeping less than seven hours per day, is associated with an increased risk, of developing chronic conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and mental distress. It is said that, 40% of women and 25% of men have sleep problems, this is of major concern to individuals, families and the country as a whole. Lack of sleep, has many health problems and complications, than those stated previously. Some of the many sleep deprivation complications and issues, will be listed in the paragraphs that follow. We need to get a better understanding about sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation is described with various choice of words. It is described as, sleep disorder, insomnia, sleep apnea. In a nutshell, all of these descriptions imply, sleep deprivation or a lack of sleep. Sleep deprivation can cause major health problems and should not be ignored. It can have short term problems, but can also cause, very lasting health complication. Some of the problems and concerns will be briefly touched on below: Exhaustion: A person feels drained of energy.rnCoordination: Difficulty doing simple task that calls for eye and hand coordination. Slower reaction time, clumsiness.rnBlurry Vision: Sight lacks clear vision, haziness, things appear blurry.rnDepression: A feeling of discomfort, being dejected, mood issues, stress and irritability.rnPrescription Meds: The Need to turn for help, by contemplating the use of drugs to sleep.rnSex Drive: A lack of sexual desire and wanting to get rest.rnAbsent Mindedness: Forgetting daily chores that need attention and need to get done.rnMishaps: Unstable hands, dropping things inadvertently and lack of control of objects.rnPersonal Appearance: Person looks worn-out and a lack of freshness in appearance.rnHealth: A whole host of conditions, that affect the body and can lead to diabetes, heart problems, weak immunity and many, unknown complications due to lack of sleep.rnThe information and content in this article, is derived from various sources, including the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society.
