The importance of healthcare in the United States is rising as costs are increasing and people find themselves living much longer. Americans are focusing on becoming more health conscious and we, as a society, are better at dealing with minor health problems and taking better preventive care. This isn't easy however. It takes a great deal of knowledge and work by the individuals. We have become much better informed and healthcare social media has been a large reason why. From the perspective of healthcare providers, social media has proven to be a blessing and a curse as people know more, but also become privy to many more inaccuracies. People are always looking for information regarding new treatments, their diet, and new ways to exercise, among others. It's tough for people without medical training to properly analyze doctors, treatments, and prescription drugs. Obviously they can analyze a doctor's bedside manner and assess if they feel better because of a prescription drug. It's more difficult to analyze overall treatments, especially in a comparative way. Nonetheless, that hasn't stopped many people from passionately discussing their issues through healthcare social media. The rise of the internet has provided access to more knowledge than anyone could've dreamed of, even 20 years ago. Many people (even seniors and the disabled) are in control of a lot of content that they post and share and they have the ability to research healthcare options and potential treatments. The problems for companies come when the information that is posted by patients and prospective patients is false. That information can be latched on to by others and the resulting momentum can be extremely damaging to the bottom line. Eventually it all can take on a life of its own. Considering how often this happens and how fast this misinformation can spread, it can often be too late before the healthcare company or doctor even finds out, let alone addresses the problem. From there, they face a struggle in damage control those that the misinformation isn't true. Having a strategy to prevent these issues ideally involves having a coherent message presented by a public relations firm that is well versed in healthcare social media. Without that, a brand's online reputation could be ruined. With information permanently existing on Google, the value of healthcare companies having good control of their social media personas is invaluable. Being able to reach their target audience and inform them about their products is a huge competitive advantage over companies that can't achieve this as well. In the day and age, control over Healthcare Social Media is the difference between success and failure in a lot of cases the last few years. Plenty of factors have to be controlled and accounted for. Healthcare companies are consistently releasing new beneficial products, but they can seem confusing to an average person that isn't educated fully on healthcare. These potential customers can be further confused by the presence of misinformation within social media. Being able to balance having a large presence online that promotes the brand with making sure that the information written about the brand is accurate is important today and will only be more important moving forward.
