Are you looking to make repairs to your a/c or heating unit but have so many questions? The following are answers to common questions asked by many consumers. This information is to help you on making the right decision to make repairs in your home.

When you look for a company to make any a/c or heating repairs, make sure to look for someone who is honest, professional, and reliable. Make sure they are experts in all makes and models of heating and air conditioning equipment. One of the most important thing is the company is licensed, bonded, and insured. Do make sure they can give you warranty on the repairs they make.

Warranties should include parts and labor. Thermostats also have warranties, usually covered for 5 years. A lot of people ask what temperature they should keep their thermostat. During the summer, Power companies suggest you set your thermostat at 78-80 degrees. Some people are not comfortable with this but remember that for each degree below 78 you will see an increase in energy costs.

Many people wonder if they should turn off their thermostat when they leave the house. Power companies do not suggest this, but you should raise the temperature setting on the thermostat a few degrees (5 to 10) during the summer. This will use less energy and still allow for the air conditioning system to recover when you lower the thermostat to your desired comfort level when you get home in the evening. A programmable thermostat can make this happen for you. During the winter, set the thermostat at 68 degrees during the daytime, set it at 55-60 during sleeping hours, and when the house is totally empty, turn the thermostat down to 55 degrees.

Another question many people ask is about their filters in the house. Normally your filter is located in the return air grille or in the air handler. If you are unable to locate yours, just schedule a tune-up with a professional. When you get a tune up on your equipment, the professional can show you where your filters are and answer any other questions.

In addition, filters should be changed frequently but it depends on the type of filter you have. If you have a basic filter you should change once every three months according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Check your filter regularly and change it when it is dirty. If you have a specialty filter, such as an electronic one, normally it would need to be changed less often.

Can I close up the vents in rooms I am not using? Does it save money? It is not a good idea to close vents in your home. The reduction in airflow can reduce your system’s cooling capacity and even cause damage to your compressor.

Have you had a precision tune-up lately? Did you know the average air conditioning and heating system in Las Vegas operates for 1,800 or more hours a year. Wouldn't you think a maintenance would be important during that time? YES, it is necessary. Maintaining heating and air conditioning equipment systems is the proactive approach to prevent malfunctions and costly repairs. The cost of preventive maintenance is typically much less than the cost of major component failure and energy loss. Taking the proactive approach to preventive HVAC maintenance will provide optimum equipment performance. Maintenance improves equipment efficiency which leads to lower energy consumption, lower energy costs and the reduced likelihood of unexpected repairs. Preventative Maintenance Customers benefit from discounted pricing, reduced energy costs, extended equipment life and reduced failures.
