PLR rights essentially allow a person to use another author's work after making changes. The latter can be very slight. For instance, the addition of an introductory paragraph. However, if one chooses to, he or she can rewrite the entire brief. Whenever a person is given permission to change content written by someone else it is considered private label rights.
Private Label Rights and Copyrights
It is important to understand that private label rights are not the same as a copyright. It does not mean that the person automatically has additional rights, as seen with reselling or reprinting. Understanding the exact rights one has purchased is essential.
The popularity of PLR began several years ago when reprint rights were offered. Many things have changed since that time. Currently, there are several different rights that can be offered. - Offer the product to members
- Product modification
- Use as Web content
Asking the Right Questions
Anytime one is unsure about which rights he or she has purchased, it is wise to ask questions. Even if a person is sure that certain rights were bought, it is still possible to be mistaken. For instance, a person may have purchased reprint rights in order to obtain quality content. However, the marketer may then discover that the only way the product can be sold is through the link provided by the merchant, who will then have each customer sign up for a newsletter.
Marketers in this situation have only succeeded in losing some of their clients to the merchant. Unfortunately, although it is a deceptive practice, it is not uncommon. The good news is that marketers who ask the appropriate questions before making a purchase can prevent this from happening and enjoy the benefits of the PLR rights they have purchased.
