There are many factors which could help a person to become alcoholic. Line between social drinking and alcohol addiction is very thin and many drinkers unknowingly cross the line. People with family history of alcoholism or alcoholic friends are more likely to develop this addiction. Other triggering factor is mental health problem such as anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder.
Social drinking has become a common fashion. Occasional drinking turns into alcohol addiction and people do not realize it until some symptoms surface. There are signs and symptoms, which can draw the line between occasional drinking and addict ion.
An alcoholic feels ashamed about his or her drinking after the drinking hangover gets down.
If a drinker has turned into alcoholic, he will try to hide about his drinking episodes. He will even resort to lie to hide the fact.
Frequent need of drinking to get relaxed is another sign of alcoholism.

The drinker starts avoiding social activities or mixing up with people due to his drinking habits. This is another sign indicating that he may be turning into an alcoholic. All his focus lies with drinking only.
If a drinker starts denying his drinking episodes by underestimating amount of drink, downplaying its consequences, blaming others for it or complaining about problems in exaggeration, it indicates that his drinking has turned into alcoholism.
The drinker does not admit the extent and severity of his drinking and thus fails to have proper support or medical care.
The drinker may get heavily drunk and stay in such state for long. He does not want to come out of feeling of euphoria due to drinking.
A drinker starts getting tremors or hallucinations means that his drinking habit has turned into alcoholism.
The drinker always tries to find ways of having access to an easy supply of alcohol.
All the people who drink do not turn into alcoholics, but alcohol abuse is a big risk factor for alcohol addiction. It could suddenly trigger alcoholism, thus one must be careful and watch out for signs indicating that drinking habit is not turning into alcoholism.
