Sometimes good parents find themselves all alone when it comes to finding help for their troubled teen. Maybe they were single parents from the start, maybe they’re divorced, their spouse had died, or maybe they are still married but the other parent is not interesting in being helpful but no matter the cause it can leave a worried parent feeling even more alone. Do you see yourself in one of these situations? Do you have a troubled teen and you do not know where to turn for help? If so, the following resources should help you feel less alone as you figure out how to manage your troubled teen.

Finding Support Online

  • Reach out to online support groupsrn
  • Find referrals and reviews for different treatment optionsrn
  • Read parenting articles for fresh inspiration and new communication tools to tryrn
  • Find online courses in coping with stress or parentingrn
  • Communicate with others who are in a similar situationrn

As you access internet resources, remember to practice caution. Be wary of programs which guarantee cures. Also remain very aware that you could be considered a target by predators. It is likely you are feeling overwhelmed and looking for comfort and there is nothing wrong with that as long as you are sure you dealing with people who are truly interested in helping you. The internet is a great tool but be cautious of over-sharing until you are sure you are dealing with reputable sources.

Look For Local Resources

  • See what is available at the libraryrn
  • Universities often have parenting and community outreach programsrn
  • Do you have a Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, or Big Brother, Big Sisters?
  • Are there support groups?
  • What sorts of counseling options are available?
  • Check for parenting classes offered locallyrn
  • Check city and county resources for programsrn
  • After school supportrn
  • If you are religious, are there programs through church?
  • Opportunities for you to relaxrn

As you are looking locally for resources, think of it as building an army of support. Parenting a troubled teen can feel rather isolating so make sure you are gathering the right support you need. It may seem odd to include relaxation but if you do not take time to recharge your own batteries, managing your troubled teen is going to be even more difficult. It is not selfish to make time for yourself.

You Are Not Alone

No matter your situation you are not alone as you try to navigate finding help for your troubled teen. If you are at the very beginning of your journey and have not reached out yet, please pick a place to start and build your support system. There are a wide variety of resources available once you figure out how to start looking for them. You know yourself and your teen best so find what you think might work and give it a try. If it doesn’t work, move on to the next thing you find. As you keep your focus on building a support network, you are more likely to find the right help for you and your teen. Hopefully, these tips give you a good place to start.

As a parent it may be hard to reach out for help with your troubled teen but the quicker you find you and your teen the right help for your situation the faster you will see results. There is a lot on your plate if you are alone through all of this but the feelings of being overwhelmed will break free as you are able to gather resources. Being alone while you parent a troubled teen does not have to be a lonely experience. Keep searching and reaching out and you will find what you need.
