Occupational therapists help people become as independent as possible. They work with a variety of people in many different settings. This is a career where it’s truly necessary to care about changing a person’s life in order to be successful.
Different people seek out the help of an occupational therapist for different reasons. People with chronic physical or mental disabilities might seek the assistance of one in order to find ways to modify daily living tasks. Examples of these tasks might be taking care of cooking, doing laundry, and getting dressed. People that have suffered an accident such as a traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury might need assistance relearning how to complete tasks.
Regardless of what the reason is, a person with an occupational therapist job will assist the patient in developing the skills needed to take care of themselves. Some occupational therapists have jobs in a school system. In that case, it is possible that they will be assisting the student in adapting skills to be successful with their education goals.
Besides working on school based goals and daily living skills, occupational therapists might also work on decision making skills, memory, and perceptual skills. This is just a small sampling of the many things that they assist with in order to improve their patient’s quality of life.
Occupational therapists utilize a variety of equipment and materials. They are experts at putting adaptive
equipment to use along with eating aids, wheelchairs, and even computer equipment. All of these things strive towards the ultimate goals of independence and a good quality of life.
In order to get an occupational therapist job a master’s degree is the minimum degree required. They are also regulated by each state. In order to get a license, a therapist must have the stated mandatory education requirements and pass a national certification exam. As of May 2008, the average annual salary is $67,920 and the hourly average wage is $32.65. The field of occupational therapy is growing and is expected to continue to do so over the next ten years.
Prior to entering the master’s program, it is helpful to have taken classes in biology, anatomy, and psychology. Working with other people is also an important skill. Occupational therapists often work with more than just their patients. They also work with family members and other therapists. By working as part of a team, they are able to address all of the patient’s issues instead of just a single part. Another part of working with the whole patient is being able to adapt to different settings. Even if they are working with a student in a school, it might become necessary to address issues at home related to homework. A child in a hospital will need follow up care when returning home.
Occupational therapist jobs are important to many people’s quality of life. They provide important rehabilitative skills and assist people in adapting to remain independent. No matter where they work this is the ultimate goal.
