The immune system is a complex system of interactions involving many organs and glands as well as substances such as bone marrow, white blood cells, lymphatic vessels and serum factors in our blood. Our immunity depends on all these components functioning together.

The human immune system is a truly amazing constellation of responses to attacks from outside the body. It has many facets, a number of which can change to optimize the response to these unwanted intrusions. The system is remarkably effective, most of the time. This note will give you a brief outline of some of the processes involved.

White cells are motile with specialised functions. The number of leucocytes in normal blood ranges between 4,500 and 11,000 per mm3. Fluctuations occur during the day; lower values are obtained during rest. Physical exertion may cause the count to exceed 20,000 per mm3. Most of the leucocytes are outside the circulation, and the few in the bloodstream are in transit from one site to another. There are three classes of leucocytes: granulocytes, monocytes, and lymphocytes.
