Stress or trauma is not the actual factor causing hair to gray but it works as an accelerator. It can speed up the process. When the levels of stress hormone increases, it affects the follicle by making it age at a much faster rate. This in turn, causes the hair to lose its colour. 4.Graying can be caused by Alopecia Areata This rarely happens but graying can also be caused by autoimmune diseases like Alopecia Areata. In such cases, our own immune system attacks the hair follicles and the sufferer experiences decreased hair growth with excessive hair loss. When the lost hair grows back, it often grows back white. 5.Vitamin B-12 deficiencies are also responsible. Nutritional deficiencies can make your hair lose its colour.
