High quality saffron is not only yellow in appearance but has a unique aroma and it is because of its unique qualities it is always considered special among the other varieties of spice. Apart from its unique features, it is also a very rare spice that is very difficult to extract. It takes much labor and dedication to extract even a small ounce of saffron from the flower. As per the figures, it takes around 150000 crocus flowers to extract approximately 35 ounces of pure saffron spice. According to the figures, Iran is said to be the largest producer of Saffron till date because of the climatic conditions that are favorable for its growth. Other than Iran, Spain and India are the regions that produce saffron in the world. However, Iran is still the mass producer of the special spice. Such is the immense cultivation that Iran alone caters up to 75 percent of the total demand of the whole world. Saffron is used in different regions of the world for different purposes like cooking, medicinal and other herbal purposes. rnKashmir is one of the best locations in the world besides Spain and Iran where quality saffron is produced in plenty. The process of cultivation in Kashmir starts from the early stage of the plant Sativus that blooms in the months of October and it is in the same month these flowers are dried that later on produces the spice. It is because of its dark and long threads, Kashmiri Saffron is said to be the best variety of saffron available in the world. However, it is because of the high demand of the rare saffron spice in India, it has lead to the rise of many illegal practices too and one of them is the adulteration of saffron by mixing it with materials that may be impure but still they may appear like saffron. rnLike mentioned in the above context, it takes immense dedication and labor at the same time to extract a minute amount of saffron from a single flower. The scientific name of the flower from which the special spice is extracted is ‘Crocus Sativus’. It is due to the increasing problem of saffron adulteration all round the globe people have become more aware to judge the quality of saffron before they buy the spice. Quality Saffron spice can always be judged of the unique aroma that the spice contains. It is because of the same quality saffron is used in food items also.
