Historical Background of Marbella Community

History has proved the existence of human life on the mountains of Sierra Blanca in Marbella thousands year ago before the birth of Christ and many residuals of human beings belonging to Paleolithic age and Neolithic age have been found along the sides of the mountain range in Marbella. According to some recent historical fact findings it has been proved that Punic and Phoenician civilizations were present in Rio Real region during the 7th century before the Christ. Findings of Roman existence are also present in the form of various discoveries like the thermal baths, etc in the Old Town of Marbella Community. Existence of Marbella is quoted in the historical literature belonging to Muslim rule during the middle ages. Marbella was developed as Walled City during the Arab rule over the city. Arabs constructed the castle in the city and then covered the whole city with walls with only three entrances to the city- from Malaga, from the Sea and from Ronda. This castle is still present in Marbella but the doors and moat of the castle does not exist today. King Fernando the Catholic conquered Marbella in 1485 and this is evident by the existence of engravings located in the Choir area of the Cathedral of Toledo. The infrastructure of Marbella city went through many changes during the 16th century as this city was being conquered by many nations. “Medina” which was once the centre during the Muslim rule is now replaced by the construction of Open Square and this square is linked with the sea through Calle Nueva Street. During those historical times, the major sources of livelihood were the livestock and agriculture. The agriculture was much developed during the Arab’s rule over the city and it is still a good source of income in the region. 19th century was the start of installation of various industrial units in Spain and during the same time industrialization developed in the Malaga region of Marbella. Now this part of Spain is the second biggest industrial unit in the region of Peninsula. Half a century ago, Marbella had the population of ten thousand inhabitants only, with agriculture being the major source of income.
