History of Bingo

The antecedents of Bingo game belong to 1530, when Bingo was referred to by another name known as Beano. History of Bingo game is directly related to the state-run lottery popular by the name "Lo Giocco del Lotto d'Italia." This lotto game was popular in Italy. There was one version of Lotto game where every player would show the card with nine columns and three rows that had four free spaces for each row. Here the announcer would pick a random number in every round. The player who had completed row would eventually become the winner. Soon, this version of Lotto became high popularity in whole of Europe.

It is believed that this version of Lotto was considered to be the forerunner of the present day bingo game. However, there are several other forms and references to the emergence of Bingo. In one such reference, toy salesman named Edwin S. Lowe discovered the game being played at country carnival in Atlanta, Georgia. He was fascinated by the Beano game and introduced the game in his home town. The name Bingo was actually a misnomer of the game Beano.

It was as early as mid 30s that Beano was started referring to the "Lowe's Bingo" and it became complete success altogether. The game began to show widespread popularity all across US. The churches as well as social clubs also realized the vast fund raising potential of Bingo game and therefore bingo games gradually started being accepted in different circuits. The bingo which is played at the family bingo halls as well as those played online is actually modified version of the historic Beano.
