If you have spent much time at all doing business online working toward your home business success, you have probably heard the term “Web 2.0.” It is a term that gets tossed around a lot, many times by people that are trying to sound trendy, but who do not always know what the term means.

In today’s internet environment, Web 2.0 is something that is important to you, and can greatly affect your home business success. The key is to understand how it affects you, and how you can use that knowledge to your advantage.

In a nutshell, Web 2.0 refers to the social media environment. It is about connecting with people, and building relationships with those connections. It is an environment that is less about selling, and more about sharing information and expertise.

Even if you have never learned about how social media can affect your business, you have probably heard of, and maybe even used some of the social media websites. Site like FaceBook, Twitter, and YouTube are all considered Web 2.0 sites, and each of them have a unique way of building a base of potential customers.

The first thing you need to understand about social media websites is that people do not go there to be sold things. They are really not interested in being marketed to, at least, not directly. So, if you cannot market to your connections, how is it good for business? Because the things you do will work toward establishing yourself as an expert, and gaining the trust of the people in your network. If done properly, these steps will lead your contacts to your business website, and by the time they get there they will be willing to read your sales letter, and they will be more willing to make a purchase.

It starts with information. Whether it is by blogging, or writing and submitting articles, you need to provide information for people so they will start seeing you as an expert in your area. Unless they believe that you really know what you are talking about they will not trust you enough to buy from you.

Each blog post, or article, or HubPage, or Squidoo lens will contain a link that will lead your readers to your business website. When they are ready to learn more about you and what you have to say, they will use that link and get to your sales pitch.

One thing you have to realize before you start down this road; marketing in a Web 2.0 environment takes time. In order to make connections and build relationships you need to be willing to make a long term commitment. If you try to rush the process it will not work as well, and will actually end up taking longer to see the results you want. Take it slow, and concentrate on making connections.

Using social media is a great way to build a customer base for home business success. The more people you can make contact with and build strong relationships, the more
