Home Improvement Projects You Should Hire Help For

Home improvement videos can make things look easy. However, there are many repairs that will take much longer than the 30 minutes depicted in a home improvement show. Additionally, many repairs will wind up costing you a lot more if you make them worse on your own. Finally, many home improvement projects have a built-in band-aid count that should be considered.

Plumbing Issues

If you don't have plumbing skills, messing around with plumbing can be expensive, heavy, and destructive to your house over time. One little leak can cause a lot of damage. If you love to tile, stick with your backsplash. Hire someone to tile your shower surround to avoid leaks under your bathroom.

Swapping out a toilet is a nice way to improve your bathroom, but if the bolts holding it to the floor are rusted to the flange, the removal process just got a lot more complicated and awkward. In addition, if something really does go wrong, plumbers charge more on the weekend. Finally, don't start these projects in the evening. Plumbing is nearly always three trips to the hardware store.

Electricity

Never, ever fiddle around with electricity. It only takes one nasty shock to remind you that there are reasons electricians are licensed and insured. Depending on the age of your home, you may be dealing with ungrounded outlets and other electrical risks. If you don't know what you're doing, you can risk injury and fire.

Taking Out Walls

Open-concept is the biggest design trend of the year, but if you take out the wrong wall, your house and your budget will suffer the consequences. Even if a wall isn't load-bearing, you may find that you need to re-route wiring you didn't expect to see inside the wall or face other structural challenges. A good contractor will know what sort of beam you need above your new open-concept space and get it installed so your second floor doesn't sag over time.

De-Greening Your Pool

Pools need daily maintenance, at least to test the pH of the water and to check the chlorine level. Additionally, you'll need to keep the filter baskets cleaned and the skimmer empty. If your pool has gotten green, chemical treatment may not be enough to bring it back. The process of cleanup will take a careful review. Equipment may need to be swapped out and the pool may need aggressive treatment to kill the algae. This cleanup will take repeated tests and multiple visits. It's not a great DIY project, either in terms of time or the supplies required. Discuss saving your pool with Windermere Pool Service & Repair if they are in your area before you tackle a green pool on your own.

Tree Removal

If you have a large tree that needs trimming or removal and it is anywhere near power lines or any building on your property including your house, you will need to hire a professional tree removal service. In addition, it's a really good idea to get the trees on your property checked out on a regular basis, particularly if they're old or at risk from local bugs. With this maintenance, you'll know when a tree can't be saved and that it should be taken out before it falls and causes damage.

Landscape Design / Sod Installation

Putting down a new lawn is an art. One of the challenges of putting down sod is that you need to keep it healthy enough to grow without drowning the rest of your landscaping. If you want a new shade tree in your newly sodded lawn, it's a good idea to discuss the timing with a lawn professional. New sod takes a lot of water all the time, but new trees need to sink their roots deep and learn to stretch to get water. Keeping the lawn alive might just kill your new tree, or encourage it to grow an unsafe root pattern. Hire a landscape designer and time things out properly.

There are many things you can do to improve your home that won't put your property or your person at risk. Paint, remove wallpaper, hang pictures, and put up shelving. If you ultimately decide you need to open a wall, bring in a pro that can protect you and your home from a DIY disaster.
