Acidity or heartburn is a common occurrence that most people face. One in two people are preyed by bouts of acidity. Hyper-acidic condition of the stomach is the root cause of acidity. The cells in the inner lining of stomach normally and regularly secrete acid (hydrochloric) to liquefy the food we consume, thus making it easily digestible. This is a normal procedure. But when the acid production exceeds the amount required by the stomach, acidity problem arises. Prolonged acidity leads to corrosion of the stomach wall and formation of ulcers. Pain and burning sensation above the stomach or beneath the breastbone is a dominant sign of acidity.
The other signs could be belching, nausea, farting, vomiting, coughing, respiratory problems, voice change, pain in ears, chest inflammation, loss of appetite or feeling hungry frequently etc. Many people also suffer from acid regurgitation or jumping of acid up the food pipe. This gives a feeling of burning in the heart region. Therefore acidity is even called heartburn. Acid regurgitation also leaves a sour taste in the mouth; a taste resembling that of a stale orange puree. The causes of acidity could be as follows:
1. Consumption of fatty and spicy food
2. Stress
3. Smoking
4. Excess alcohol intake
5. Skipping meals or not having them on time
6. Too much exposure to heat or sun
7. Weakness of valve
8. Aging
9. Obesity
10. Pregnancy
11. Faulty functioning of digestive system
12. Intake of Non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
13. Medical conditions like gastro-esophageal reflux disease, gall stones, hyper-calcemia, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, presence of the bacteria, helicobacter pylori etc.
Home Remedies
1. Drink fresh mint juice daily to get cured of heartburn.
2. Suck a piece of clove to get instant relief from this problem.
3. Drink a glass of cold milk to get rid of acidity.
4. Mingle a teaspoon of soda in a glass of water and drink. This will relieve acidity quickly
5. Mix rock-salt with carom seeds and chew some salted seeds after meals. This will prevent acidity.
6. Drinking a glass of cabbage juice daily would keep acidity at bay.
7. Suck on 10 grams of jiggery daily after meals to put an end to acidity problem.
8. Drink coconut water three times or four times a day to avoid acidity.
9. Having a bowl of yoghurt immediately relieves acidity.
10. Consume plenty of banana, cucumber and watermelon. They help in curing acidity problem.
11. Drink a glass of warm water early in the morning. Water neutralizes acids and ends acidity.
12. Add cumin seeds to a glass of water. Boil for 2 minutes. Filter and allow cooling. Drink the water after each meal. This checks acidity.
13. Prepare a concoction by adding 2 teaspoon honey and 2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar to a glass of water. Drink it after meals. This is an effective home remedy for acidity.
