Poison Ivy is a plant which is mostly found in North America. This plant has colorless oil called urushiol which is the main reason for allergy. This oil oozes from crushed or cut part of stem or leaves. When this oil comes in contact with our skin it penetrates the skin and cause rashes which may appear within 12 to 48 hours after contact. These rashes will star as small bumps but will soon enlarge into itchy blisters. None of the body part is immune to this oil. But there are many home remedies for poison ivy which are easy and simple to follow.
Discover some of the effective, soothing and easy home remedies for poison ivy. Boil oatmeal in water and let it cool off. Apply it warm on the affected area forming a thick layer of it. It will harden once it dries. You can also mix a tablespoon or two of baking soda in order to get extra relief from oozing and itching.
One of the most practical home remedies for poison ivy is to apply the affected area with dishwashing liquid which has anti grease agents and wash it with cold water. You can even rub alcohol to the affected area and rinse with water. Later wash this area with water and soap. To get relief from itching rub the inner side of banana peel on rash. You can even apply aloe vera juice on the affected area in order to get instant relief.
Vinegar helps in healing and drawing out the poison from poison ivy. It is best to use cider vinegar and distilled vinegar. Baking soda can be used by mixing three tablespoons of it with one tablespoon of water until it forms a thick paste. Now apply this paste on the rash and let it dry. Or you can even try full immersion in baking soda bath which is soothing.
Calendula lotion can be applied since it prevents the spread of rashes to other areas and reduces the irritations. In same way calamine lotion can also be applied which reduces skin irritation and soothes the skin. Rubbing freshly cut stems of the Jewelweed plant over the rash gives instant relief from itching. Garlic oil can be applied over the affected area; this will remove poison ivy completely. One simple way is to wet the infected area and rub table salt on it.
