Menopause represents a hallmark time in a woman’s life. The end of, menstruating, fertility, birthing, and a shift from childrearing to self-focus. Menopause is a wonderful time in a woman’s life. However in the U.S. many women have menopausal symptoms that disrupt the joyous time of menopause. Symptoms such as hot flashes, nighttime hot flashes, mood swings, difficulty losing weight, insomnia, low energy, and low libido become bothersome and at times affects their quality of life. In 2004 the HER II study was halted because of the increase in breast cancer and the decrease in the cardiovascular benefits thought to be enhanced by hormone replacement therapy (HRT). In the end the risks did not outweigh the benefits. Prior to that Premarin was the #1 selling drug in the country. Now many health care practitioners are reluctant to prescribe HRT. The new recommendations with taking HRT is for the lowest dose and the shortest time possible. Is there a natural alternative to HRT? Excitedly yes there is. Below I’ll introduce to you some natural remedies that are just as effective without harmful effects. Women in the U.S. overall have a more difficult transition into menopause. In other cultures, especially in Asian cultures, women have spent a lifetime of eating soy products, vegetables and fish which contain nutrients that support and balance the female hormone system. And the Asian women have been physically active. American women overall have not. Good nutrition and physical activity early in life contributes to a healthy transition during menopause later in life. rnSo what are we to do now that the symptoms have started? Thankfully there are several good natural remedies that work. They work with the body to support the female hormone system so that over time the symptoms improve. I can speak from experience, I had a surgical menopause in my 20’s and spent many years on HRT. Not only did HRT not improve the symptoms but I experienced side effects that made it difficult to take them everyday. Now that has changed. The 1st natural remedy is a progesterone cream. Progesterone is one of the two female reproductive hormones. Estrogen in the primary female reproductive hormone. During menopause low estrogen levels contribute to menopausal symptoms. Progesterone can convert to estrogen in the body so that by using the cream you receive both the effects of progesterone and estrogen. The source of the progesterone is from the wild yam plant. The 2nd is herbal support. Herbs such as Damina, Black cohosh, Dong Quai, and Squaw vine support the female hormone system. The 3rd is essential oils. Clary Sage, Sclaressence, and DragonTime have active ingredients which support our hormone system. Essential oils are the life force of plants. They are used topically. The last product is a tea: Yogi Woman energy tea. The tea contains herbs to balance female hormones. You can find this at your local health food store. The more severe your symptoms are the more remedies you must need. Other helpful tips include the importance of physical exercise, staying cool, recognize your moods and manage your stress.
