It’s impossible to ignore the phenomenon that is the e-book these days. Major online retailers like Amazon.com are reporting e-book sales that match, and sometimes even beat, their traditional book sales! There are even publishers springing up around the world who publish solely in electronic format, and nearly every tech manufacturer has, or is releasing, an e-book reader. Even traditional publishers are jumping on the band wagon, and you’d be hard pressed to find a single one that doesn’t have at least one electronic impression.

If we’re going to look at how e-books can help your business, however, let’s start at the very beginning. What is an e-book? Well, as you probably already know, the term e-book simply means electronic book. It’s a book that can be downloaded from the internet, or sent in an email, and read on a computer, an e-book reader, or printed out.

Unlike traditional publishing, however, e-books cost much less to create, since there are no printing or shipping charges, and anyone with a word processor, an idea and a little writing ability can create their own e-book, on any topic they can imagine!

How does that help your business though? What could publishing an e-book possibly do for your business? There are actually several ways.

The first, and most basic, is that you can sell an e-book that you’ve created to the visitors to your site. Since your site already has a theme, and a target market, you already know what they’re interested in, and if you create a great e-book on a topic that would interest your visitors, you’re likely to be able to sell a few copies (or a few hundred) and make some direct revenue off it. You might even decide to list your e-book on a platform like Clickbank, or Amazon.com, and benefit from having affiliate marketers sell your book for you.

The next benefit has to do with your reputation in the business world. It’s a well know fact that people are more likely to buy from someone they perceive as an expert, and there’s nothing that says ‘expert’ faster than your name in print! In this case, there’s a dual benefit. You can sell your book on your site, and on online platforms, AND you can call yourself an author. Of course, your e-book had better be great, or the people who read it will see through this particular plan!

Then there’s the value of giving your e-book away. I know that goes against the grain for every business owner, but there are clear benefits to creating an e-book as a free gift.

The first benefit is that it’s not going to cost you much. Aside from some time and effort to write, design, and package your book for download, there’s very little in the way of investment involved in creating a free e-book. Even a free sample costs you something to give away, so in terms of the cost of promotional materials, there’s not much that can beat a great e-book!

Then there’s the benefit that you can require signup to your mailing list, before visitors to your site can download your book. If you’re using email marketing, then that email address is valuable to you, and since they’re getting something tangible in return, most people are much more willing to sign up for an e-book offer than just because they like your site!

If you create a free e-book for download, you can also encourage readers to share it with their friends or colleagues, and if you include links to your site in the book, you can increase your traffic. Think about it – if one hundred people download your book directly, and they each send it to ten other people, you would have reached one thousand one hundred people without lifting a finger!

The one major hiccup that many business owners face when considering whether or not to use an e-book to market their business and their website is that they don’t know where to start. There are plenty of resources on the internet that will tell you how to create a basic e-book, as well as more in depth books and packages. There are also a wealth of professionals who will take your basic information and turn it into a professional, saleable e-book, for a fee.

Whether you’re looking for something that will improve your profile, something that will make you extra money, or that special something that will put your marketing efforts into overdrive, creating an e-book might just be the solution you’re looking for. Why not do a little bit more homework, and decide how best to use this fantastic resource to your, and your business’s advantage!
