Shooting is central to basketball, and learning how to get better at it can be challenging. Getting better at this demands concentration, technique and also knowing the best times to shoot. No matter how talented you are, you also have to put in many hours of practice if you want to continually improve. The purpose of this article is to introduce you to some proven tactics that will enable you to become better and more consistent at shooting.

Practice as much as you can doing team drills and on your own to help improve your shooting. Practicing the same shots over and over can be tedious but it's the only way to improve. Try this simple drill; take practice shots standing close to the basket and gradually move further away. This will help you learn how much force you need to use as well as how to keep your balance.

You will gain confidence as well, as you learn to make shots from further away.

Everyone should practice throwing free throws, or foul shots. Some consider these shots to be the purest form of shooting, since it is just your and the ball, with no one guarding you. While this should, in theory, make this type of shot the easiest, many players have difficulty with this, largely due to problems with focus and getting nervous. So try to relax as much as possible and focus on a spot above the rim. Throw the ball in an arc and follow through with the shot.

One good thing about free throws is that you can practice them anytime you're on a court with a basketball.

While visualization may not sound very practical, it's been proven that basketball players can become better shooters by imagining themselves making more shots. Several documented studies have been done where basketball players' shooting skills were measured before and after visualizations. Surprisingly enough, it's been shown that players can improve their shooting performance as much by visualizing as by actual practice! Not that you should visualize in place of practicing, as you wouldn't stay in very good condition that way. Why not gain the best of both worlds by practicing and visualizing? Visualization can be done anytime, during practice, games or in the shower. You will get better at making basketball shots if you continue working on it and also work on your form. These tips will be helpful when you continue training and pinpoint the things that you want to improve. But, you should also work on your own areas that need working on. If you think that you have problem areas that are weak, then work on them as opposed to forgetting about them so that they will get better in the end. Even the best players have to practice hard to improve their shooting skills and take them to the next level.
