Business process analysis is a technique and methodology used by operational efficiency professionals to help businesses improve. This is done by documenting, reviewing and analyzing company's business processes and finding ways to reduce operational costs, optimize processes and eventually improve customer satisfaction. A qualified business analyst brings an important skillset of being able to quickly understand a set of business processes by gathering data from variety of sources in a given organization - starting from interviewing company business subject matter experts and expanding to audit trails found in IT applications, cost data and other resources available in a given company. English, Please! In many cases, business process analysis involves the use of software tools that help you capture and analyze business processes. The term BPA was created by Gartner analysts to identify a category of business software tools that can be used to help in business process discovery, analysis and design. Using these tools business analysts can better map your existing business processes, understand the issues associated with running the business and offer alternatives that can help alleviate these issues. In some cases solutions can be purely organizational, in other cases they will require extensive use of information technology. Whatever the case maybe, business process analysis offers a way to build a business case for change. Why Should You Invest In Business Process Analysis? The key answer to this is change. Businesses must react to their customers, regulations and other external events that impact the way business is conducted. No matter how you try, you cannot avoid this change and adapting means first of all knowing what you have in hand. Getting to know your business comes with business process analysis in conjunction with a firm grasp on the data your enterprise creates while the business is conducted. If you want to find a better approach for your business, you will have to pay for business process discovery, either done internally by your staff or by hiring someone to help you. Good businesses can recognize when the time for change has come. Analyzing business processes is an essential part of this recognition. Catching Inter-Departmental Collaboration When businesses grow, they often find that communication between various parts of the business is limited to certain data exchange and is not widely understood by business process participants. People in their hob functions are often task oriented and have a hard time understanding a bigger picture in a given company. This is where business process analysis becomes extremely handy. Business processes cross organizational boundaries. If you have a good idea about how your processes flow and interact, it is much easier to understand how data moves between roles, departments and even outside the company to customers, suppliers and service providers. This has a huge value because it often helps finding gaps in the information flow that is hard to see without a thorough understanding of the business process.
