The uterus of the women is the pear-shaped hollow organ in which a baby grows during the pregnancy period of the women. The lower part of the uterus is known as cervix, which extends into the vagina. Cervical uterine cancer occurs when the cells in the cervix and the uterus start dividing abnormally without control, developing tumors.

Cervical uterine cancer begins in the uterus of the women. Although this cancer is more common in women aged fifty years or more but can occur at any age. It develops gradually and in the beginning only few cells undergo precancerous changes. Uterus is the female organ that contains and nourishes the baby during the pregnancy period and cervix is the narrow end of the uterus. This cancer occurs when the cells in these organs start dividing abnormally. If this cancer is not diagnosed in the early stages, then it may spread to the nearby organs through the walls of uterus or cervix. The cancer cells may enter nearby lymph nodes and may spread to the other organs of the body.

Diagnosis and treatment of cervical uterine cancer

If the cancer doctor suspects that cervical uterine cancer is present by the results of Pap test, then he/she wants to perform some other tests for the confirmation. Colposcopy is one of the tests used for the confirmation of this cancer. In this test, vinegar-like solution is applied to the cervix and a very thin light instrument is used for the examination. Sometimes doctors remove a small amount of tissue from the cervix and examine it under a microscope; this procedure used for the diagnosis of cancer is known as biopsy.

Treatment of cervical uterine cancer depends on how abnormal cancer cells look like. Some damaged tissues that have very close appearance to those of normal tissues do not require any treatment, but they should be checked regularly. If some other growth or tumors is noticed then it need to be removed because it may develop into cancer. This can be done easily by freezing them off with the use of a special instrument. Another method used for the removal of tumor is to burn them off by cauterization or by throwing high-energy laser beam on them.

These procedures are very effective because they destroy only the abnormal areas without destroying the nearby healthy tissues. These procedures are very effective for removing cancerous tumors that are left on the surface of the cervix. If these cancerous tumors spread, then the cancer surgeon needs to remove either the tumor or the entire cervix and uterus by an operation known as hysterectomy.

Surgery is a very common method used for the treatment of cervical uterine cancer but sometimes it is used with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. These treatments prevent the cancer from spreading or they destroy the cancer cells that have reached to the other organs of the body. High-energy rays are used in the radiation therapy to stop the cancer cells from growing or to damage the cancer cells. Chemotherapy is a method which involves giving powerful medication either orally or by injection to kill the cancer cells.
