Dysregulation, also known as emotional dysregulation, refers to a poor ability to manage emotional responses or to keep them within an acceptable range of typical emotional reactions. When someone is experiencing emotional dysregulation, they may have angry outbursts, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, self-harm and other self-damaging behaviours. Over time, this condition may interfere with one’s quality of life, the way one interacts socially, and relationships at home, work or school.rnIf you have someone in the family who is suffering from emotional dysregulation, then you can help and support them by: Seeking professional counselling. Typically, this will include cognitive-behavioural therapy that combines strategies like mindfulness, acceptance and emotional regulation. Seeing the doctor and asking for their advice can help get the right medical treatment. Diet and exercise. Coupling counselling and medication with a healthy diet and exercise can be beneficial. This helps you ensure the person gets enough vitamins and nutrients to support their physical health while supporting a healthy mood and self-care routines. Encouraging the person concerned to share how they are feeling, and what they are going through. Getting them to open up and talk about issues, emotions etc. rnLetting them know that they are not alone, ‘there are many individuals throughout, who are going through what you are and there is nothing wrong. You are not alone!’rnYou can help and support them with one or a few of the above treatments or review how you can positively change their lifestyle. Also, from a spiritual perspective, you can support them with the following spiritual suggestions that can introduce positive energy and over time bring about a positive change, coupled with the professional and medical treatment. Every living being has a pure Soul within them. So, you can pray to their Soul to help them to cope with their pain and suffering. Do so by recalling the pure Soul within – “Dear pure Soul of John (insert their name here), please help John cope with his suffering.” This is a very powerful thing to do, as the Soul within will provide them with the strength and positive energy. Keep a picture or idol of your Lord within their room. The positive energy from this image or idol will bring inner peace and feel the room with positivity. Try out this mantra that has been tried and tested by many Self-realised beings, throughout the world, who have experienced the positive result of this mantra: rnD-A-D-A B-H-A-G-W-A-N N-A A-S-E-E-M J-A-I J-A-I K-A-A-R H-O! Chant this mantra for 10 to 15mins, and while you say each word of this mantra, visualise every alphabet of the word with your eyes closed. rnIf the situation becomes very severe, then you may increase chanting the mantra for an hour per day. Anyone who you know is suffering from emotional dysregulation has little control over how they will react in any situation. At that time, we may experience panic, stress, anxiety, concern and powerlessness. But with professional and medical treatment coupled with spiritual support and a change of lifestyle will give the person relief and comfort, and also the ability to move forward in life.
