Erectile dysfunction, commonly called impotence, is defined as the persistent inability to achieve and maintain an erection rigid enough to have a satisfactory relationship. This is a very common problem, which appears globally one in 5 men over 18 years of age. The risk increases with age, and after age 40 it does so exponentially. This is the frequency of erectile dysfunction in different age groups: • 30-39 years: 2%. • 40-49 years: 10%. • 50-59 years: 16%. • 60-69 years: 34%. • 70-80 years: 53%. To answer the question of why erectile dysfunction occurs, one must first understand what the mechanisms of erection are. And then we will see the main causes of impotence. How erection works? The penis is formed by 3 cylinders, the two corpora cavernosa in the superior part and the urethra in the inferior part. The erection is produced by the entry of arterial blood into the corpora cavernosa, while the occlusive mechanism of the veins is activated to prevent the outflow of venous blood from the penis. An erection that is not very rigid can be due to an insufficient entry of arterial blood (most frequently) and a failure of the veno-occlusive mechanism. The entry and maintenance of blood in the penis, as well as its sensitivity, are regulated by the nerves of the penis (cavernous nerves and pudendal nerve) that come from the spinal cord, connected in turn with the brain. A correct hormonal balance is also very important, especially for sexual desire. Finally, an adequate psychological environment is also necessary for the erection to take place. We can, therefore, say that erection is a neurovascular phenomenon produced under hormonal control and in a specific psychological environment. There are different types of erection: • Psychogenicrn• Reflectsrn• Nocturnal rnWhat are the main causes of impotence?rnNow that we know that erection is a neurovascular phenomenon that occurs under hormonal control and in a specific psychological environment, we can understand that any neurological, vascular, hormonal or psychological pathology can alter the mechanisms of erection. The main causes of impotence are those related to cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, tobacco, sedentary lifestyle, and overweight. There are also physical causes such as alcohol, drugs, chronic diseases (lungs, heart, liver or kidneys especially), hormonal disorders (testosterone, prolactin, thyroid hormone), neurological disorders (multiple sclerosis or spinal injuries for example), surgical treatment, with chemotherapy or radiotherapy of rectal, retroperitoneal or prostate cancer and some pharmacological treatments for hypertension, depression or potent analgesics. If you are young and healthy and none of these factors affect you, then it is most likely that the origin of the problem is psychological. How to permanently cure erectile dysfunction problems? The main consequence of the lack of erection is the dissatisfaction of both the patient and the couple. Therefore, given the erection problems, it is advisable to visit the specialist as soon as possible.rnSolutions for erection problemsrnIn addition to specialized care by a doctor, it is essential to modify harmful habits of solving erection problems. •Healthy diet The excessive consumption of red meat, sausages, or processed foods, is harmful to health, and the proper functioning of the male sexual organs. It is essential to replace these products that are not recommended with highly nutritious and healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, and low-fat foods. Tobacco is another of the great enemies of health, which has a direct impact on erection problems. •Cardio exercises This type of exercise favors the strengthening of the muscles and tones the body. •Psychological assistance Occasionally, erection problems are due to emotional or mental disorders. This occurs with a higher incidence in men under 40 years. Specialized care will help to solve the matter.
