Most people are aware of what automation is. It is the process of ensuring that various technologies are used to do the jobs normally completed by humans. On the surface this may sound like a bad thing, but in fact humans are still required on many different levels and for many different tasks. The difference is that not all of these tasks are safe or desired for humans to complete.
When you think about plant automation in this sense, you can see why oil and gas automation can actually save lives. The demand on the oil and gas industry is high, and this means the companies that are responsible for providing the oil and gas need to be efficient at making it available. Plant automation helps to ensure that every process that can be automated will be. This in turn speeds up the whole process and makes it easier and faster to get the products through the supply chain to the people who need to use them at the end of the chain.
Another point you should consider is that retrieving oil and gas is obviously not the safest activity you could be involved in. The ability to automate some of the processes involved in retrieving oil and gas means that humans are able to work more safely than they perhaps did in the past. Since Health and Safety are paramount in today’s working environment, we can see that oil and gas automation has more than just one plus point involved. Not only does it make the process faster to complete, it also makes it much safer.
These industries are probably among the more dangerous ones you could ever work in. Of course every job has its points of potential danger, but rarely are they as pronounced as they are in this industry. So it should be clear that automating various processes here is essential to keeping the workplaces as safe as they can possibly be. Indeed, this is one major advantage of automation that many businesses rely on to keep their employees as safe as they possibly can.
The process of automating processes in the oil and gas industry does of course require a significant amount of investment. The equipment and processes are not cheap, but if they enable a company to produce more products at a faster rate in the end, the money will be worthwhile. Thinking of it as an investment in the future of the business is a good way to look at it.
It is easy to see then why plant automation can make the oil and gas industries – in common with many other industries – more competitive and more efficient. In fact it is hard to imagine these industries without it, isn’t it?
