If you have a dental problem, you need to receive adequate care from a dental professional to optimize your dental health. However, every case is different and every patient has specific needs. How do dentists determine what the best plan of treatment is for a particular patient? Proper Data Collection Increases the Rate of Success for Dental Treatments In some cases, patients suffered after-treatment side effects, which could have been avoided if the dentist performed the right planning and decision-making steps. Before you undergo invasive dental procedures, especially when getting implants, your dentist needs to ask the following questions: 1. What prompted you to come to my clinic?rn2. Do you feel any pain or discomfort in your teeth?rn3. Have you had any dental problems in the past?rn4. What dental treatments have you received in the past?rn5. Have you undergone any restorative or cosmetic dental treatments?rn6. Do you have a current medical condition?rn7. Did you have any medical conditions in the past?rn8. Are you taking any medications? Data collection is the preliminary stage of treatment. This will determine what concern the dentist will address. Depending on the information gathered, the next step will be to make a diagnosis. Diagnosing the Dental Problem A general dental examination is required for all patients who will undergo any form of treatment, whether cosmetic or restorative. Invasive surgical procedures, such as root canal and dental implantation will require more tests. The most important procedures in diagnosing the patient are: Radiography or X-ray. An X-ray of the full teeth and jaw bone of the patient will be taken. In some cases, the cavity on the biting surface of the tooth is very small but the interior has almost been hollowed by bacteria. This can be seen only using radiography. X-rays also can show the actual condition of impacted, fractured and crooked teeth in relation to the gums and alveolar bone. Client charting. From the results, dentists can determine the teeth need the most urgent treatment, especially if any teeth show large internal cavities. A chart will be used to record the condition of each tooth and identify the ones with the problems. Gum assessment. For patients who want to get implants, the gums need to be closely examined. If the gums are unhealthy, it is unlikely for implants to last. Gums that have receded too much will no longer be able to hold implants in place, thereby forfeiting a patient’s eligibility to get implanted. Developing a Treatment Plan After data collection and examination are done, the next step is for a dentist to develop a treatment plan. This is the most extensive procedure because it requires careful thought and decision-making. This is commonly done through the following: Analysis. After collecting all the important data about the patient, the dental team will discuss the patient’s dental problems and suggest what treatments will be needed for each one. If more than one problem is present, the dental team will recommend taking action on the worst condition first. For example, if the patient has a decayed molar and yellowish teeth, the decay will be treated first by filling or root canal. After the decay has been removed, the patient may now undergo whitening treatment. Considerations. The dentist will review the patient’s medical and dental history to rule out any procedures that can be harmful or ineffective for the patient’s current condition. Treatment options. Based on the patient’s medical history and dental problems, the dentist will come up with the most effective treatment options. Most problems can have more than one treatment of choice. For instance, if a patient has a lost tooth, the dentist may offer either dental implants or crowns to fix the problem. If the patient has periodontal disease, the dentist may recommend scaling and root planing or regular dental cleaning. Patient consent. Once the dentist has decided the best treatment solutions for the patient, it’s time to show the patient what options are available. Most of the time, the patient will choose the first and best option but in some cases, due to financial constraints, a patient may opt for a cheaper alternative. In the end, the patient’s preference is what the dentist will follow. Once all of these are done, a dentist can safely perform the dental procedure that best suits the needs and condition of the patient. A dentist should never perform a restorative or cosmetic treatment if the patient has not been completely examined. Complications may arise from medical issues, which are often overlooked, such as diabetes and hypertension. However, like most medical operations, dental treatments also require specific drugs and invasive procedures, which may be dangerous to immunocompromised patients. Likewise, it is important to assess the conduciveness of the treatment. If the patient will gain little or no benefit from it, another plan of action must be considered. Ft Worth dental implants are best for patients to get the safest and most effective treatment for their dental problems.
