When it is time to lose a little weight a lot of people will start to reach for the low calorie and sugar free food items. This way they cut the calories without losing taste because most of those items have an artificial sweetener added. But when the fat doesn't fall away they wonder why do artificial sweeteners had an impact on our ability to burn fat?

There have been studies that show that some people actually get bigger when eating and drinking sugar-free products. They are laden with added sweeteners that can actually cause weight gain. These sweeteners are made up of natural compounds or chemicals that give the sweetness without the calories. However, it is believe that especially around the belly, they are causing the body to store more fat and increasing the cravings for sugar and sweets.

People are wondering just how this is possible; they are using something that is supposed to help not hurt. In fact, manufactured sweeteners may be interfering with the body's capability to naturally count the calories based on the sweetness of the food consumed. It may actually be telling the body that a doughnut has the same amount of calories as a sugar free soda. This then in turn causes people to overindulge in the sweet tasting foods and drinks.

Most times when manufactures produce food, they manipulate more than the sugar. When a food is low in sugar, it usually has more added fat or salt so that the flavor or texture of the product isn't affected. For example, you may not be getting many calories from sugar free ice cream, but you are getting more fat than you would with regular ice cream.

It boils down to sacrificing calories ends up meaning more fat. And, since you are adding more fat to your body, you are slowing down your body's ability to burn the fat. The more you eat and drink food with artificial sweeteners added, the more you may be sabotaging your own efforts to shed those extra pounds.

Do artificial sweeteners had an impact on our ability to burn fat is a question that is still being looked into. Although with studies and research being done, most will say that yes it does. Tricking the body seems to be working against many and in fact increasing their desire for sweets. Food and drinks with an artificial sweetener in them don't have to be avoided, they just cannot be substituted for the right foods to burn fat and lose weight.
