A quest for freedom from the bondages of suffering that has chained us for uncountable lifetimes is fundamental to all living beings. Nirvana means permanent freedom or liberation from all the bondages that bind us. IS EXTERNAL SUBSTANCE NEEDED? Let’s understand this with an example!rnSuppose you are bound from head to toe with a tight rope. And there are various tools and instruments available to you, placed right before you so that you can easily free yourself. What do you think, will you be able to get yourself free without any help from an external substance? rnNo! Even the tools and instruments are of no use until someone comes and cuts the rope for you. That person may cut the rope only in one place, which means to the world, you are still seen to be completely bound from head to toe. However, you know for sure that you have been set free now, and you are well aware that with your sincere and persistent efforts, you will now soon be able to free yourself completely too! Similarly, to attain the stage of Nirvana too, you need someone who can cut the rope of ignorance and free you from the bondages of karma that are causing incessant suffering to you. This person is called Gnani Purush or the Enlightened One!!! Just like a goldsmith has the knowledge as well as the experience of gold, Gnani, the Enlightened One has the knowledge and the experience of the Soul. On the path of spirituality, Gnani guides us and helps us attain the stage of Nirvana. Without this external help, we would be lost in the ocean of our Self-ignorance and would be drowned in the puzzle of the dualities presented by this world. Understanding the process of Nirvana is beyond the dimensions of our intellect and therefore it can’t be achieved without The Enlightened One, who is skilled and visionary in the spiritual dimension. Gnani Purush, the Enlightened One, is the one who has progressed on the path of Nirvana and hence knows exactly the milestones on the way to attain Nirvana. He is aware with perfection of the glitches on this road that leads to the stage of Nirvana. Therefore, He is supremely capable of making us realize our own Self, and with his guidance, the pathway to achieve liberation (Nirvana) becomes very much fruitful and guaranteed. There are two stages of liberation (Moksha). Pujya Niruben Amin beautifully describes these stages. 1.The first stage – This happens when Gnani makes us aware of ‘Who am I’ by gracing us with Self-Realization. After gaining the right knowledge of ‘I am a Pure Soul’, we constantly experience inner peace in the corner of our heart, no matter how fierce our outer circumstances may turn out to be! It is because the Soul is an abode of eternal bliss. After Self-Realization, as we follow the words and instructions given by Gnani, our awareness of the Soul increases. 2.The second stage – After Self-Realization, with the grace of Gnani, the overall charging of new karma stops. Karma are the coverings that do not allow the properties of the Soul to come forth. It is due to karmas that we experience the bondages. The karma obscures the eternal bliss of the Soul, which is why we do not experience permanent happiness, inspite of being so close to our Soul. Now, after attaining Self-Realization (the first stage of liberation), as we finish all the pending karma with equanimity, we attain the second stage of Nirvana. It happens when not a single karma remains on the Soul. When one attains this stage of Nirvana, the physical body is left behind in this materialistic world and the Soul advances to Siddha Kshetra, where it resides forever!!! Here, the journey of the Soul gets completed successfully and the Soul remains in its natural state of infinite Bliss forever! Thus, with the divine help and grace of Gnani, you can and you should attain the first stage of liberation in this life itself; the sooner it happens, the better it is!
