How Do I Check My Breasts to get knowledge about breast cancer anomalies?
Important Points to Remember
As it is mentioned above that there is no right or wrong way to do breast examination, but with the help of some instructions it can be performed effectively.
1. You can do it while taking shower or in your bed room when you change your dress or use body lotion.
2. It is important to perform at the time when you are comfortable to do it.
3. DON’T forget to check whole breast including armpit.
4. Lumps are so common in women breasts so manually you have to look for the lumps by touching the breast with palms or finger pads with three different levels of pressure low, medium and firm so that all tissues can be examined thoroughly.
5. Certain changes take place in breasts that can’t be observed through manual examination so visual inspection is also necessary for performing effective self examination. 6. Observe the changes of size, shape, skin changes, nipple changes like fluid discharge etc need to be observed during visual inspection.
7. You must know what is normal for you and what is considered to be abnormal.
8. Breast changes should be explicit to you so that you can unusual changes easily.
9. Manual and visual inspection both should be included into the examination.
10. If you notice any unusual changes tell your GP straight away.
11. Attend breast cancer screening sessions regularly.
What to do if Unusual Changes are diagnosed?
If a woman finds any unusual change she needs to see her GP as soon as possible instead of creating fuss because many changes are normal benign changes and are not necessarily due to breast cancer. Your GP will reassure the occurrence of unusual changes by doing a detailed breast examinationof your breasts. It is possible that you are asked to come at different times of the month with relation to your menstrual cycle.
If the GP finds any change suspicious he/she will recommend further diagnostic tests to confirm whether the change is cancerous or benign breast change. Older women are advised to get their breasts screen as they age because the risk of developing breast cancer increases with the age and screening is one of the most effective and useful methods to catch cancer when it is too small to be diagnosed by other methods of examination. If an older woman gets her breasts screen regularly and performs self examination as well there are greater chances for her to locate cancer at early stage.
