To detach yourself from the ego and mind, you need a Gnani Purush, the Enlightened One. A Gnani Purush is completely free from ego and the effects of mind. The Enlightened One dwells in the realm of the Self as a pure Soul. Hence, only He can separate us from the ego and the mind. What is Ego?rnParam Pujya Dada Bhagwan, the Enlightened being, defines ego as: “Ego is to claim to be something you are not. One does not know who he really is and hence claims to be what he is not. That is called ego. Ego lies in the belief of, ‘I am John.’ ‘I’ (the real Self) is not John (please insert your name here). Yet, we believe ‘I am John’. That is called ego! If one believes, ‘I am a Pure Soul’, then there is no ego. This can only happen once we realise ‘who am I’, this is defined as Self-Realisation. What is the mind? rnMind is the effect of past causes. Just like the other senses, the human mind has its own function. The function of the mind is to think. These thoughts can be good or bad. When external and inner circumstances arise, the mind goes into action, sprouting thoughts. When these thoughts sprout, we become attached to them, and therefore, experience their effects. But if we could remain detached from them, then we will not experience any misery. rnHowever, it is not possible to stay detached whilst we are in a false belief that, ‘I am John’ and thus believe ourselves to be the owner of the mind i.e. ‘this is my thought, it is happening to me’. rnYou are neither the ego nor the mind - you are really a Pure Soul.rnHow can you know the Pure Soul? What are the properties of the Pure Soul? How is the Soul separate from the mind and the ego? We understand this experientially only after Self-realisation, on receiving the knowledge of the Self, the right knowledge of ‘who am I’. rnPure Soul is the right and permanent answer to ‘who am I’. ‘I am John’ is relatively correct whereas ‘I am always a Pure Soul’ is really correct, regardless of any situation or any person. Gnani Purush, the Enlightened One, Detaches us from the Ego and the Mind.rnOne cannot understand ‘who am I’ on his own because until there is the presence of ego (the false belief of ‘who am I’), the right belief cannot set in. It cannot be known or understood. Only when Gnani Purush bestows upon us the gift of the knowledge of our real Self, the dissociation between the mind, ego and the pure Soul occurs. With the knowledge of, ‘this is ego, and not me, I am a Pure Soul’, we are able to detach ourselves from the ego and mind. Once the wrong belief is destroyed, the right understanding begins to prevail in every circumstance and with everyone as we start living our life in the awareness of the Self – the pure Soul.
