Mental and physical problems frequently occur amongst the elderly. They are daunted with worries, uncertainty and loneliness, and because of these anxieties, negative thoughts arise. Once negative thinking starts, the effects snowball out of control, and unless you have the right understanding and effective scientific solutions, one will continue to be bothered with trouble. The reasons behind an increase in negative thoughts amongst the elderly are:rnChronic physical bodily pain. rnLoneliness, depression and lack of sociability.rnFear of feeling vulnerable.rnAbsence of activity for the mind and the body. rnLack of things to look forward to in life.rnExpecting the worst outcome in life.rnFinancial difficulties and instability.rnWorries and tension.rnAbsence of having someone to share worries and concerns with.rnLack of fresh air, exercise, and change of scenery and situations in life. rnThe above incite negative thinking. However, Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan has said: “Right understanding is that which finds happiness in the state of unhappiness.” If we have the right understanding, we will have the ability to find solutions in all circumstances. rnFollowing are a few steps that you can introduce into your life to reduce negative thinking:rnInstead of trying to destroy a negative, do all you can to remain on the side of positive. Replace each negative thought with five positive ones.rnAsk for strength from your choice of faith to help you defeat negative thoughts. A tested and proven effective, scientific solution is to perform pratikraman. Pratikraman means to pray to God seeking forgiveness for every negative thought and making a firm decision to backtrack now, “Dear God, I am sorry, I made this mistake. Please forgive me and grant me strength so that I do not make this mistake again.” By doing pratikraman, your negative opinion reverses and thus you find internal peace amidst everyone and everything around you. Increase your level of spiritual and religious involvement to the best you can. rnKeep yourself active, physically as well as mentally. rnAlways keep your mind busy. An idle mind is more prone to negative thoughts that take away your tranquillity.rnApply the right understanding that, ‘every single effect that I’m experiencing in this life is a result of my past life karma. There is no one else to blame for what is occurring in my life.’ We become how we think. So, always attempt to remain positive. Rather than saying, ‘I have negative thoughts, I am in pain, etc.’ try saying, ‘the body is in pain, the mind is having negative thoughts.’ In times of tremendous difficulties, visualise an image of an elevated being – God, who is always with you and is comforting you in every way. This will bring you a lot of inner peace and stability. The above solutions will help you jumpstart on your journey of positivity, and it will make you feel quite good. And, for a permanent and an everlasting solution to all problems and miseries, attain Self-realisation!rnAfter Self-realisation, life naturally takes a turn towards positivity. When we attain Self-realisation, we understand who we really are. rnWe understand that really, ‘I am not the owner of the name and body; I am a pure Soul whose function is to only see and know, and who is an abode of eternal bliss; not an iota of pain or misery can ever touch it!”rnThus, after Self-realisation, we can remain in the awareness of the Soul and see it separate from the negative thoughts which arise and subside in our worldly self that is temporary.
