Photovoltaic modules or Solar Panels are the mainstay of solar power generation. The mechanism for generation of electricity in these panels is based upon the knocking of electrons from solar cells.
Photovoltaics or PV is the industrial term used for describing the technology that is used for capturing solar energy from the sun. Photovoltaic modules, also known as Solar Panels can be considered as the Direct Current (DC) generators that receive their power from the sun.
Generation of Electricity
A solar panel is made up of several silicon-based solar cells. Light photons strike these cells and knock out electrons that become from the silicon atoms. This results in free flowing electrons that can be converted into electrical current by connecting the module in a closed exte
al circuit. These electrons that power the circuit, return to the other end of the cell and the same process begins again.
Solar Cell Mechanism
The cells in Solar Panels are made up of multiple layers of silicon, which is a semiconductor. When sunlight falls on the cell, it results in the creation of an electric field between the layers. The higher the intensity of the sunlight is, the more the electricity generated would be. Several cells are bunched together to create the panels, which are then mounted onto the roof of a building.
A solar panel’s power is measured in terms of Kilowatts peak (kWp). It signifies the rate of energy generation at peak performance in high-intensity sunlight. Photovoltaic cells are made in different sizes and shapes. Even though, the PV systems are mostly made from panels fitted atop roofs, now it has become possible to use solar tiles as well.
Power Output
- A single solar cell based upon crystalline technology generates 0.5 V of voltage.
- The current ampere is dependent upon the area of the cell surface.
- In the case of standard 12-volt Solar Panels, there are going to be 36 to 72 PV cells that are wired together. These cells would generate a DC current with a voltage output of 17 V. These panels can be connected with other modules in order to create a complete PV system that generates enough voltage and current to power a house.
Modern Solar Tiles and Slates
Solar tiles are new alte
atives to Solar Panels and in addition to generating power they also add structural value to buildings by replacing the regular roof tiles. While the cost of these solar tiles can be double that of a solar panel that generates the same power, but you would be saving money on the ordinary roof tiles. Since the solar tile technology is still developing, its less cost-effective compared to Solar Panels. In most cases, it is only considered in situations where panel systems are not feasible due to planning or aesthetic reasons.
