How Does a Home Invasion Differ From a Burglary?

There are many different kinds of property crimes and while the majority of them do not cause physical harm to the property owners, there is one kind of crime that can. This crime is referred to as home invasion and it differs from burglary in several key ways. However, there is one action you can take that will help deter both of these kinds of property crimes, and that is to install a home security system.

A burglary is the term for when your house is broken into and your valuables are stolen. A home invasion, on the other hand is when a perpetrator forces his way into your house while you are still there. This kind of property crime is much more dangerous than a burglary. With burglars, you can bet that they absolutely do not want to come across the homeowners at any point. They want to get in, get what they came for and get out. Criminals who execute home invasions, though, actually commit their crimes because the occupants are home.

Burglars tend to break in during the day when most people are at work or otherwise away from their houses. They often work alone and choose houses that are easy targets. This is why a home security system is so valuable for guarding against these kinds of crimes. When burglars are confronted, they will usually run away instead of taking the chance of having to commit a violent act.

Home invaders, though, are looking for a confrontation. They will target homes at night because they know people are generally at home during this time. In fact, they usually intend to do harm to the occupants as well as the items in the homes. They almost always work in pairs or include even more people so they can have the physical advantage. These perpetrators often come equipped with weapons, duct tape, handcuffs and other implements to execute their crimes with a minimum of struggle on the behalf of the residents.

In either case, you can help protect yourself by installing a home security system. While you can’t always deter burglars or home invaders, you can at least have peace of mind in knowing that help will be on the way immediately after an alarm is triggered.
