If you have considered trying to lighten your teeth for a brighter smile, then you may have heard about teeth whitening gel. If you have wondered if it really works, you will be happy to know that it does. By understanding how it works, you may decide that this is the whitening method you would like to use. Many things cause stains on teeth. The foods we eat, beverages we drink, and even such things as using tobacco all contribute to the stains on teeth. Simply getting older can also cause teeth to appear yellowed or gray. When teeth are not very white, a person's confidence may be lower than it should be. If you want to improve your image and increase your confidence, then using teeth whitening gel to reduce the stains on teeth is an excellent option. Different whitening gels contain different types and amounts of whitening agents. Most will contain the active ingredient hydrogen peroxide, while others use carbamide peroxide as the bleaching agent. Both of these types of peroxide can help to remove stains from teeth. These chemicals begin to oxidize when in contact with the teeth. This means that the molecules of oxygen are working to lift the stains from the teeth. In order to be effective, the teeth whitening gel must stay on the teeth for a period of time. The most effective way to do this is through the use of dental trays. You can go to your dentist and have trays fitted to the exact shape of your teeth, or you can get trays that will generally fit your teeth. Some whitening kits come with trays that can be molded to fit your teeth. In general, the longer the whitening gel is touching the teeth, the more effective the results will be. However, if you leave the product on longer than directed in the instructions, you may find that your teeth are becoming sensitive and you may feel some pain or will have to wait longer between uses, so it is important to follow instructions exactly. Generally, the products can be safely used regularly and great results may be noticed within a week or two. You will also find that different gels use different strengths of the active ingredient. You will want to use the strength that does not cause your teeth to become sensitive. The whitening process may take a little longer with a lower strength gel, but the results will still come and you will be glad you decided to whiten your teeth. With affordable home whitening kits, you will soon love your smile again and your confidence should increase accordingly.
