Gonorrhoea is one of the most widely spread sexually transmitted infections in the UK and it’s on the increase with a 2011 estimation showing a 25% rise in the newly diagnosed cases of gonorrhoea. While newly diagnosed cases of other STIs are on a decline, the significant rise in gonorrhoea has contributed significantly to the fear that the disease has become untreatable. The same possibility has received even a stronger foundation with a recent report from WHO, stating the possibility that available medical defence against gonorrhoea may not be effective enough to cure the infection any more. However, it doesn’t mean that the available options for gonorrhoea treatment in the UK shouldn’t be used anymore.

The demographical studies have found gonorrhoea is most common among men aged between 20 and 24 years and women of aged between16 and 19 years of age. The chance of gonorrhoea contamination becomes most obvious if an uninfected person indulges in unprotected sexual intimacy with an uninfected one. Sharing the same sex toys also contributes significantly to gonorrhoea contamination. This sexually transmitted infection is caused by a type of bacterium known as neisseria gonorrhoeae. Despite its asymptomatic nature gonorrhoea can be treated easily, provided that the infection is diagnosed early and an infected person uses the right antibiotic according to a physician’s instruction. According to a recent report published in the BBC Health, t sexually active men and women are advised to take an STI test at least once in a year. In 2011 the number of people getting tested reduced to 2.1 million compared to 2.3 million in 2010.

Like many other sexually transmitted infections, gonorrhoea also doesn’t show much sign at an initial stage. Generally it takes 10 to 30 days for the gonorrhoea symptoms to appear. Moreover, even when the symptoms appear, they remain mostly harmless and compel an infected person to believe that it doesn’t require much attention. However, if within 30 days after indulgence in an unprotected sexual intimacy a person experiences an unusual penile or vaginal discharge, painful sensation during urination, swelling of the testicles and other genital parts, vaginal bleeding, rectal discharge, and pain in lower abdomen, an STI test is recommended. It is not prudent to conclude that you are infected by gonorrhoea by simply depending on the symptoms as the same complications can be caused by other sexually transmitted infections. Please remember that leaving gonorrhoea untreated may cause serious health problems that include epididymitis, ectopic pregnancy, permanent infertility, infection of different internal physical organs, blindness and severe joint pain.

One of the most popular antibiotics used for gonorrhoea treatment is Azithromycin. This medication belongs to a group of medications known as macrolide antibiotics. Being a wide spectrum antibiotic it can be used for treating several health conditions, including gonorrhoea, chlamydia, non-specific urethritis, ureaplasma urealyticum and mycoplasma genitalium. The medicinal properties of Azithromycin directly affect the bacterial cells and deactivate the nucleus only to stop the viral cells from replicating. Naturally the bacterial strains become weak and your system receives the chance to remove it completely. Generally a 5-day course of Azithromycin is enough to cure the infection completely.
