Nowadays people use computers for a lot of rather mundane tasks: They check social media, do their banking or read blog posts (Like this one!). When they get the new, best computer (and hopefully use IT recycling services to get rid of the old one), how many people really do notice a significant difference in power? Likely not many. Their computer activities won’t change, and they likely upgraded only because the old computer started to underperform, or just because a newer piece came out. People don’t often push computers to the limits of their capabilities, which means they not truly appreciate just how far computers have come since their invention back in 1936. Yes, you did read that right. The worlds first programmable computer codenamed Z1 was created between 1936 and 1938. It was created by Konrad Zuse in his parents living room if you can believe that! Although if we want to go back even further, the word ‘computer was first used way back in 1613 and was used to describe a person who performed calculations, leading to the word ‘automaton’ to mean a self-operating computer or an insult to people who act without thinking. In any case, it’s fair to say that computers have advanced somewhat since the early 20th Century. Computers, through the ages Since the Z1, computers have grown in capabilities and power at an incredible rate. Their importance within our world was immediate too. Computers were created to help break German codes during WW2. In 1949, the ‘Manchester Mark 1’ was used to search for Mersenne Prime Numbers. In 1969, Man Landed on the Moon using computers with power less than what is in a modern mobile phone. That’s the oft-told version, but the actual specifics are far more interesting. The Apollo Guidance computer named the Block 2, had 36K of Ram. The average computer nowadays has 4GB of RAM. That is such an incredible jump that its hard to actually comprehend. There is a theory that the number of transistors that can fit per square inch in a computer will double ever four years. This then results in continuously more powerful computers. This is known as Moore’s Law and was invented by Gordon Moore in 1965. There is also a theory that Moore’s Law is now reaching breaking point, but that’s another blog post for another day. Everyone likes to get the newest and best computer. When you go get your hands on the newest piece of kit, I hope that you do two things. First that you use a reputable IT Recycling business to dispose of your previous technology. Secondly that you take a moment to consider just how far computers have come in less than 100 years. After only a few years, computers were used to help the War effort, and over 60 years ago a very basic (comparatively) computer helped man leave earth and land on an orbiting moon. Just think about that the next time you use your home computer to check Wikipedia to prove a point or use IMDB to see what else that actor was in. When you are investing in a new computer, and looking for a good IT Recycling business, then consider Ecogreen IT. We are a top business dealing in Computer Recycling Bristol.
