Self-growth requires the energy our focus creates. How we focus our awareness is how we activate our inner resources. When we focus on our thoughts, we activate more thinking. When we focus beyond thinking, we activate the Wisdom of our Body. In sports, that places us in the Zone. In healing, that activates the Wisdom of the Body, the home of powerful inner resources. In whatever we do, that inner wisdom allows us to manifest excellence. We perform better and we heal better; the trick is how to activate that wisdom by choice.

Patients can participate in healing on more levels than thinking. Participating from more than asking questions and focusing on the thinking level ignites the Wisdom of the Body.
In fact, beyond their thoughts is the Wisdom of their Body, which is the home of powerful inner resources. Patients tap those resources when they fall in love, lose a loved one or have special things happen to them; why can’t we tap those resources when we need them to heal?

Focusing on thoughts directs awareness exte
ally. The focus of this article is to have doctors and patients interact on an experiential level instead of just an intellectual level. Every person has this experiential level, but society’s focus is too often limited to the intellectual level and we ignore our greatest
resource in healing. The Internet has developed patients with a wealth of knowledge and has made them more active in their interactions with doctors. That is definitely a plus, but if that places their focus on thinking, that may be the way they ignore the Wisdom of their Body.

Thoughts enable us to be creative and better in problem -solving, but our thoughts are more efficient when our focus includes the Wisdom of our Body. Thoughts are symbols that represent people, places and things. In a medical context, they represent modern medical knowledge. That knowledge is incredibly valuable, but it is most effectively used when the patient is connected to the Wisdom of Their Body Thoughts become useful tools, creatively used when we transcend them and connect to inner wisdom. Too often, we just focus on thoughts that trigger fear and insecurity; by doing so, we ignore powerful inner resources. Avoiding those triggers frees you from limitations and allows the patient to better participate in his own healing.
Thoughts often represent how others see you. Identifying with that perspective makes you ignore the Wisdom of your Body, the precious part of you others never see. You are the only person that connects to your inner wisdom; others can only know it intellectually. To become an active partner with your doctor, you use inner resources in harmony with the doctor’s outer resources and that is how healing happens the best.

If patients could learn to master their inner resources, the cost of the national health plan could be dramatically reduced. This partnership could make doctor treatments more effective and reduce personal suffering. The resources developed in a health crisis will be useful in bettering the quality of life after the crisis has passed. This is a resource we cannot overlook.© Marc Lerner and Life Skills 2009
