Gasoline is one of the most important fuels in use by humans today. It powers our vehicles and our machines. It provides light, heat, and security. This versatile energy source is a wonder of modern technology and ancient chemicals. Most people understand that burning gasoline produces energy to power machines, but few understand how it is actually made. The know that it is extracted from oil that is pumped from the ground, but not what it takes to get it from there into their gas tank. This article will explain the process that it takes to go from the ground to the gas tank. So read on to learn the ins and outs of this fascinating process of modern production. Gasoline is made from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are large carbon deposits that have formed over millions of years deep in the ground. These carbon deposits come in the form of a thick black substance known as crude oil. This oil is made up of chemical chains known an hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbon chains are made up of specific ratios of hydrogen and carbon, thus their name. These chain contain great amount of energy stored in the form of the bonds between these two molecules. When the molecules are separated, this energy is released. That is how this oil can be used as a fuel. The first step is to remove the oil from the ground by pumping it up. Once it is extracted from the ground, the oil is transported to a refinery to process it further. The refining process involves separating the hydrocarbon chains by size. These chains of different sizes have different boiling points, so exposing them to specific temperatures under pressure causes them to separate out by size. This process is known as fractional distillation. The crude oil is cooked until the chain begin separating out. The different sizes of chain become different types of fuel. Propane gas separates out first, followed by gasoline. Diesel fuel is the last fuel to be produced by this process. Once the gasoline chains are removed they go on for further processing. The next step in the refining process is known as catalytic cracking. In this process, several compounds are added to the petroleum. These catalysts are things such as aluminum, platinum, processed clay, and acids. These are added and the mixture is subjected to temperatures and pressure in order to break down the molecules so that gasoline will be produced. Once the gasoline is properly broken down, several other compounds are added to change how the fuel burns in an engine, These compounds change the color, smell, and stability of the gasoline to make it a more appealing product. After it has been produced the fuel is shipped to the end user at the corner gas station. There it is used to fill car fuel tanks, power generators, and other equipment such as lawn mowers and weed whackers. Now that you understand how this amazing energy source is produced, you can better appreciate all that goes into making it. A couple of examples of machines that run on it are Buy New Engines Sets and Kohler Generator.
