How Heat Pumps are Another Green Choice for Your Home
Whether you have seen, not seen, or just seen and not believed the issues pointed out in "The Inconvenient Truth", more consumers are looking for natural energy source alternatives. With items such as calculators, street lights, satellites and light fixtures taking a turn towards solar panel electricity, individuals find solar alternatives appealing due to their significantly decreased costs compared to their non-solar counterparts. The reason for going green is as much economical as it is logical. Thanks to the sun's constant energy source, that it provides us free of charge, both the federal and the state governments are turning Americans to it. With much of the world still relying on burning fossil fuels, not only is our atmosphere being put into danger but so is our wildlife and even ourselves. For those that live in a part of the world with either a warm or moderate climate, the switch to heat pumps is becoming all the more popular, and for good reason. These devices can not only heat (as the name suggests) but cool your home down as well. Thanks to the cleanliness and efficiency that they operate with, it's hard to turn them down, even if the consumer is considered an environmentally friendly one or not. So how exactly do heat pumps work? A heat pump both absorbs and transfers latent heat, either being from the outside air or the ground. They do this by applying the same principles that a refrigerator does. Usually, a pump cycle will use an evaporator to take out heat energy from the sun. A refrigerant liquid is then used to take in the extracted heat, boiling it and transforming it into gas. The compressor will then increase gas pressure to cause the temperature to rise. Eventually, the hot gas will flow back to a condenser and release heat, where the gas then turns back into a liquid. While the liquid is still at a high pressure it is passed through an expansion valve that lowers the pressure, causing the liquid to lose heat and making it cold before it enters the evaporator again. The heat can be used to warm water in radiators, preheat water for your boiler, to heat air in your household, or simply as an under-floor heating system. The amount of energy used is very small. The amount of heat produced can either heat up an entire household or a large office-like building. The big environmental benefit from these pumps is that there is no fuel that needs to be burned, thus eliminating harmful gases like CO. Another big benefit is that these systems produce enough heat to where no secondary ones would need to be installed or used. Despite what our economy may look like, these advances in energy alternatives are brightening the future for generations to come. While an individual may even be turned off by "green" methods, such as switching to heat pumps, it's hard to find anyone who wouldn't want to save a little cash.
