How helpful is that college degree for your career choice?

Many parents plan on sending their children to college from the moment of birth. They begin with a college fund that allows them to set aside a certain amount annually to go towards helping their youngster when the time comes to enter the college of their choice. This is a long term commitment that helps insure a good start on a valuable education, but only if the child wants to attend college. Some young people decide once they have completed high school and received their diploma that they have had all the education they care for, at least for the time being. Some will decide to "see the world" before becoming committed to a long term career while others feel they need to be on their own so they get a quick job in order to earn enough money to rent themselves a flat or move in with like minded friends.

There are many decisions to make when planning out a job and career

Job prospects for those coming right out of high school may be limited unless that young person has planned on a career that doesn't involve a college education to qualify. There are thousands of job opportunities but the pay is often more limited and the prospects of moving up in the company are more restricted without that college degree.
Aim high for a brighter future ahead

Students who only aspire to "sling hash" or "flip burgers" will most likely never rise above that station in life. In other words, don't just grab the first job that happens along and stick with it. Look for opportunities that will allow growth and a future full of excitement and challenges. This is where having a college degree will prove helpful. When that same "burger flipper" begins with that menial job but has his or her degree they can envision themselves moving up to management or ownership of that "burger joint" eventually.
Look for a career in a recession proof industry

Of all the jobs available the most secure are those that show little effect from recessions. They include:

Grocery - we all must eat and getting food from the farm to the stores and into homes is always going to be needed.

Heath/Medicine - People have babies, some become ill, some die from diseases, and others need to lose weight. There will always be a need for health care providers and those who use science to make new medications.

Electrical/Mechanical Engineers - Manufacturing, design, and production of the world's machinery as well as the electronics used to make them will be needed for as long as those items are in demand. Even though robots are used in much manufacturing, someone is needed to repair and maintain those robotics.

Education - There will always be a need for those who educate our youth. And they must be taught how to do it as well. A cycle that continues to improve each of us globally.

Military/Security - Vital to our world's safety are the military forces and security resources that keep this planet safe from those who would harm us. We cannot function while living in constant fear of annihilation.
