rnHow many news articles do we need to see that argue whether porn addiction is an addiction or something else. You can call it anything you want. Call it a destructive practice. Call it a waste of time. The bottom line is that someone you know has a porn addiction. In fact, as many as 7 out of 10 men surveyed have a crisis with this issue. And what they all have in common, whether they admit it’s an addiction or not, is that its almost not possible to give up on their own. Einstein was a pretty smart guy. He believed that a problem can’t be fixed by the same mind that fashioned it. That means that someone with a porn addiction rarely has the means to deal with the muddle they have produced. The biggest problem is that we have created so much humiliation around this issue, that very few people reach out for help. Most of the time they delay until someone else pushes them to acquire help. Like a wife or a girlfriend, or a spiritual leader. Humans are funny creatures. We expect others to just robotically have the tools to fix their problems on their own. So when someone has a porn addiction, we just expect them to be able to make it go away. But when you ask them about it, they will admit that they can’t seem to stop looking. They try for a few days, or even a few weeks, but then the cravings come on and they just give in again. Expecting them to have the tools to fix this is kind of like expecting someone to be able to build a house using just a hammer. That tool will work just fine when they’re framing the walls and building the floor. But they will need other tools to do the plumbing and the electricity. It’s the same when they are trying to defeat a porn addiction. They need fresh tools, and they perhaps don’t have those tools (or they would have utilized them!) There is really only one way to cure porn. And that is to create new habits. See, the rationale someone keeps going back to their porn addiction is that it helps them deal with stress. It’s the only way they know how to cope with life. If you want to know how to cure an addiction, you have to look at the reason for the break. If the person has too much stress, or is lonely, or tired, their brain will desire the escape. The way to make cravings go away, and finally learn to defeat porn addiction is to learn new tools of dealing with the stress, the aloneness, and the exhaustion.
