Normally, general anesthesia is used for performing the breast lift procedure. Due to this, the patients may feel tired or groggy for a couple of days. Sometimes, patients also have a tendency to feel disoriented or nauseous during the breast lift recovery. After mastopexy, some degree of tenderness or soreness may be felt in the area of treatment. Pain medication prescribed by your surgeon can definitely help in controlling any kind of discomfort. It is best to avoid over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen and ibuprofen that may increase the risk of bleeding. Other side effects of breast lift include bruising, swelling, changes in nipple sensitivity, numbness, increased firmness and itching around incision sites. After a few weeks, these side effects usually subside. However, residual effects may be seen for over 3 months, after the surgery. Although much of the bruising and swelling disappears in the 1st few weeks, around 6 months may be required for the breasts for settling in their new shape. Tips for Reducing Swelling after Mastopexy One common side effect that many patients experience after the surgery is swelling. As the swelling subsides, results of the surgery can be seen. Given below are some ways in which swelling can be reduced after the procedure: • Drink plenty of water • A low-sodium, healthy diet should be eatenrn• Enough rest should be taken as it would help in returning to the daily activities gradually. • Several pillows should be put behind the back while sleeping, for elevating the treated area • Medications that may lead to increase in swelling should be avoided. Your surgeon should be informed about the medications that are being taken, prior to the surgery. Depending on the methods of surgery that a surgeon uses, a small tube or a drain may be required for removal of excess fluid from the breast tissue. The instructions of the surgeon should be followed closely. After the breast lift procedure, the breasts may become smaller in size. This is after the breast tissue relaxes and the swelling subsides. It is seen that after this procedure, the breasts appear to be more natural. Time Taken for Breast Lift Healing Usually, patients can return to work within a week after this procedure. Daily activities should be started gradually. It is advised that light activities should be resumed very soon as it can help in reducing the recovery time. During this time, heavy physical activities should be avoided as the incisions may be strained due to that. You should not indulge in any kind of strenuous exercise. Sleeping on the stomach should also be avoided for the first few weeks.
