In 2017, the daily social media use measured up to 135 minutes per day. There are billions of users in the world and it seems that the number will increase in the near future. What’s all the fuss about social media, anyway? Social media is attractive because it ensures anonymity and gives your mind a boost. With it, it’s possible to build relationships and communicate in real time. If you’re like everyone else, then you possibly use Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram several times a day. This isn’t necessarily a good thing, you know. Spending too much time on social media can be harmful to you. At least, this is what the experts say and you can’t disagree with them.
How Much Time Do You Spend On Social Media?
Chances are that you’ve lost track of the time you’ve spent on the Internet, decorating your profile or catching up with what your friends are doing. What you need right now is a reality check. You may have spent hours over the course of the day, without even knowing it. But how do you know for sure how much time you have spent on social networking sites? Nowadays, there are plenty of apps that can help you determine with precision how many minutes or hours you’ve spent online each day. The thing that you need to understand is that online communication channels create addiction. You may just be on the path to addiction, which is the reason why you need to get access to some data.
Are you constantly refreshing your feeds? Well, almost. This doesn’t mean that you don’t have a problem. It just means that there is still hope for you. It’s okay to check your Facebook or Twitter account several times per day, especially when you’re bored to death. Let’s say that you’re waiting in line at the drugstore. You have to do something until your turn comes. However, when you should be doing important things, such as finishing a work task or go shopping, there’s a problem. While the detrimental effects aren’t visible now, they do take their toll.
Stop Using Social Media So Much
Many are of the opinion that video gaming is addictive. The thing is that those who play video games know when to stop. And, contrary to popular opinion, they do have lives. They go out with friends and, generally, they succeed in life. This is thanks to the skills they acquire by playing. The same thing goes for people who choose to play at online casinos. They gamble for the fun of it and you don’t see them becoming compulsory gamblers. With social media networks, things are a little bit different. The best thing you can do for yourself is to stop using online communication channels. Here are some reasons to convince you.
1. It’ll Hurt Your Relationship
You have a perfectly good relationship. Well, not for long. As strange as it may sound, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram can ruin relationships. Social media can ruin your romantic affair in many ways. You share too much info about yourself. While you may think that it’s normal to share things like your significant other’s office drama, they won’t feel the same way. Actually, your partner will be furious that you disclosed that kind of information. Okay, maybe you don’t share too much. What you do instead is post revealing photos. You don’t have to worry that your photos will be banned from the site, yet you do have to worry that your bae will see them. The photos don’t even have to be revealing enough. If your partner doesn’t like them, that’s enough to start an argument.
2. Killing Your Friendships
There’s no rule saying that using social media networks will kill your friendships. However, nothing is impossible. You may not be an aggressive person. What you don’t understand is that there are moments when you’ll get caught up in arguments. Conflicts arise for no apparent reason which is something that you should be afraid of. Let’s take an example: you disagree with your friend on the topic of banning phones in school. You voice your opinion, but the result wasn’t the one that you expected. Your friend is now upset and don’t want to speak with you anymore. Just like that, you can lose a life-long friend. Do you really want to kill your friendships? You don’t have to be told that finding good friends is difficult today.
3. You Should Be Focusing On You
Most people use online communication channels so as to keep up with friends, especially those they haven’t seen for a very long time. Others choose to stay informed about what is happening in the world. They’re more preoccupied with what Donald Trump is doing or the movement for empowering women. Are you one of these people? If yes, things aren’t looking good for you. At present, the news is almost exclusively bad. In case you didn’t know, bad news can make you sick. It makes you sad and even worried. It can even cost you your sleep. You should better focus on yourself. Start eating healthy, go to the gym, or catch up on your reading. There’s nothing more important than seeing to your health and well-being.
Final Considerations
Social media isn’t a bad thing, as long as it’s used wisely. You don’t have to delete your Facebook or your Instagram account. Nonetheless, you do have to spend less time online. Why do you think that so many researchers focus their attention on the drawbacks of using social media networks too often? Self-control is the only weapon that you’ve got. Use the Internet only when it’s necessary, like when doing research; otherwise, you’ll be tempted to sign in to social media. You might want to try signing off for an entire week. It’ll be incredibly difficult in the beginning, but you’ll manage to control yourself. Just try it and see what happens.
